Broughton: It was an astonishing move

|

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has revealed how George Gillett and Tom Hicks tried to remove Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre:

“In trying to remove Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre they made an astonishing move. I say that because, as part of my appointment, they gave specific undertakings to the (major creditors) Royal Bank of Scotland that said Martin Broughton was the only person authorised to make any board changes. They basically flagrantly abused those two undertakings to RBS and removed Christian and Ian from the board and sent us details just before the board meeting (to discuss the NESV deal) saying they had been removed and appointing two others. We took legal advice and I determined that the action was invalid. So I went back to Tom Hicks and George Gillett, reconvened the board meeting and said ‘Look, your action is invalid. I told them I was continuing to hold the meeting with Christian Purslow and Ian Ayre present. They objected, called for an adjournment – which I declined – and offered them the opportunity to take part. They chose not to, although George Gillett’s lawyer was there.”

Broughton is very confident that he will win the legal challenge:

“I am confident. I wouldn’t have taken the board through that process yesterday if I hadn’t been confident. I wouldn’t have exposed everybody to that risk if I hadn’t been confident, but you can never be certain. These things are legal judgements. We have been properly advised and I am confident. If there is any justice we will win.”

I have said that mr broughton was far to high flyer to mess around, lets make it clear for you liverpool fans that have had a go at him, the guy is great. he is and has done all he can to get out of this mess.

Hicks and gillett have been the worse part of the whole history of this great club and thats a fact.

broughton has been good not wanting media rubbish around the bid, he can not control all around him but i like the way he has gone about his business and for him to challenge h&g regards the latest bids means he is not bad at his job, he is regarded as a very good guy at what he does,

I agree. I think Broughton has done a really good job in very difficult circumstances. Purslow and Ayre too for that matter. I don’t think they deserved the stick they’ve received from some.

I don’t think we’re out of the woods yet but it looks like we might be on our way.

I AM NOT HAPPY MORE CONMEN AMERICANS ARE TAKING OVER, THESE GUYS KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL(OR AS THEY CALL IT SOCCER), THE BEST LIVERPOOL CAN HOPE FOR WITH THE NEW OWNERS IS TO COMPETE WITH VILLA OR SUNDERLAND FOR 8TH OR 9TH PLACE

  • Heavenly Jesus this man Broughton is a man that all the LIVERPOOL fans need to send their congratulatory message to including myself which i will want to have his email to enable me send mind to him,i so much appreciate which ever statement he made anytime i go through news concerning our dear club(LIVERPOOL FC)because i make it as apoint of duty atleast three times a day to get into the website of LIVERPOOL FC to get information concerning the club,i appreciate his effort and GOD will give him his reward.more grace to his elbow.

Pete, lets not get into anti-American racism. It’s not because Hicks and Gillet are crooks that all Americans are conmen. It’s obvious that, unless a fan like Steve Morgan can find enough money for a takeover, the club will be sold to someone looking to make a profit. The question is ‘will they recognise that their chances of making a profit are increased by running the club as a successful outfit?’ The reality is that not only were Hicks and Gillet dishonest but they were also bad businessmen.

What we need to do is to welcome the new owners, make sure they are aware that we want them to listen to the fans and then hope that they can get it right. They can’t be worse than the outgoing owners.

Get ready to be stiffed and flipped again, however this time by a more shrewd American.I’m surprised that a billionaire sheik did’nt move for us as we are a bargain!!!!

  • stan h says:

simon, steve morgan was just as much to blame as david moores for the mess we are in, the smaller shareholders also wanted the extra err sweetener.

NESV! sounds like they plan to run Liverpool, in a responsible fashion. Remember when we were unstoppable Remember our glory days. I believe we were run correctly then ,its a team game and we have not performed as a team in all honestly for many years, Individual heroics are never enough. From the ground up we will be rebuild and every single player who plays for Liverpool must want to give everything for the Liverpool cause because thats what , (along with the passion of the Anfield faithful made Liverpool what it was ) I am a fan of 35yrs and I still believe that Liverpool will rise again.

i sure hope broughton didn’t agree to the deal because of the desperate situation we’re in cos if that’s the case, then we will see yet another G&H era in LFC and the same problem will repeat itself.

i think all of us cant be blame for being skeptical bout yet another yank taking over. the last yank condemned LFC to where we are now..

there are reports that John W Henry & the NESV group ain’t doing too good financially at the moment..

lets just hope & pray that just like Red Sox, Liverpool can win the league in a couple of years time.

  • SQ says:

Yeah thanks to the 3 board room directors. Im really sceptical and uninspired by NESV but reading Broughton’s interview I guess its the best choice. Basically, there are no more sugar daddy’s out there. So we have to work with whats on the market. As long as LFC debt is clear, thats something LFC can build on
