Should we continue to keep faith with this Brazilian?

|

His injury problems really give people another stick to beat Roy Hodgson with as many Reds fans could have pointed out to the Reds boss that Aurelio has not been fully fit for more than a few months in a row for a long time. There was hope that the new Sports Science team could help to keep the 31 year old fit for longer periods but his body hasn’t really been kind to the Brazilian at all. Dr Peter Brukner is hopeful that he could return for the Europa League game against Napoli next week:

“Unfortunately he’s had a bad run with the injury and a few weeks ago he had an achilles tendon problem, but we decided to back off and really try and give him some good pre-season training which he needed. This is to try and make him a little bit stronger and more resistant to the sort of injuries that have plagued his career over the last couple of years, so time will tell. . . Sunday’s derby is too early for him to return but he will certainly be available for the trip to Napoli next week and that’s up to the manager to decide.”

Going by Brukner’s comments it suggest that maybe he was put into the fray too early this season after missing much of pre-season due to the fact he didn’t have a club. From what the Australian doctor also says though, it is clear they are not sure whether their programme to make him stronger will work. “Time will tell” Brukner says but the last couple of years have suggested that maybe his body really isn’t up to playing in the rigours of Premier League football every week. I hope I am proved wrong though because we need him more than ever at the moment with injury problems to other possible full back options and the uncertainty over whether Paul Konchesky is good enough. It would be great to see another fantastic free kick like he delivered against Manchester United a couple of years ago, and also because of his defensive abilities, we could really use his experience at the moment.
