Some criticism of Roy is going BEYOND criticism

|

In my article last week I made it clear that I thought that the Liverpool job was too big for Roy Hodgson and that I thought it was time that we cut our losses and bring in a manager that could deal with a club as big as ours. Now after our win at Blackburn over the weekend, I still stick by my thoughts from last week. However, I have noticed that many fans have been saying that they want us to lose so that Hodgson would get the sack and this is something I cannot accept.

Now while I don’t think Hodgson is big enough for Liverpool football club, I will give him 100% of my backing and I am desperate for him to prove me wrong, I would like nothing more than for me to have to eat my words. I do not have any dislike to Roy Hodgson what so ever, what I have taken a dislike to is, our current position in the league and the type of football we have been playing, which ultimately boils down to the manager. And for those reasons alone I thought and still think we need a new manager.

All I want is the best for the club and if that means sticking with Hodgson till he gets it right than I am more than happy for that to happen. My only fear is that he won’t get it right, hence the reason I suggested cutting our losses last week and starting a fresh. It doesn’t matter who the manager of the club is, as long at that person is doing the right job.

After going on a few forums and checking out twitter, I was disgusted with the amount of people that wanted us to lose to Napoli and Blackburn, just so Roy Hodgson would get sacked. How these people can call themselves supporters is beyond me, we should all want Hodgson to get it right. What amazes me even more is, I get the feeling that if we had a Pellegrini or Rijkaard in the same position as Hodgson, there wouldn’t be so much dislike towards him.

I wholeheartedly agree with you comments, no -one should want the boys to loose under any circumstances.

However, this just shows the desperation level of a large number of fans who really don’t want Roy, or his style of management at Anfield. I am one of those disaffected with him (I see today he is making veiled references to Rafa spending too much) and would dearly love to see him go. But, no, I wouldn’t want us to loose.

  • L22Red says:

    Let’s face it Karl,

anyone wh has done their homework on Hodgson’s managerial career can see that he simply isn’t up to the job, and was only brought in to help facilitate the sale of the club.

Rafael Benitez was sacked (call it constructive dismissal, or by mutual consent if you like)but his replacement was by a long chalk inferior.

The fact that Hodgson with his 35 years experience holds the LMA Manager of the Year award as one of his highest accoloades….tells it’s own story.

Hopefully the new owners will realise that he isn’t up to the job and will take the necessary action prior to allowing him to waste their millions in the transfer market on more players like Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky.

to me its simple, we dont have to wish that we lose hodgson’s style of management will take care of that, his body language his lack of passion on the touchline all obviously overspill on to the pitch and affect the players, his signings of konchesky & poulson dont fill the fans or the likes of torres & gerrard with any great hopes the picking of other players such as maxi & lucas also dont help when the average lfc fan knows that we have got better younger players who sometimes dont even make the bench, his comment this week that he actually believes that the teams performances are a lot better than the table shows, he is either deluded or needs to go to specsavers, at best hodgson is a good mid table manager as history proves with blacburn & fulham, statistics show during his time with both of those clubs & ourselves show that he won only 6 games away in the prem out of 66, by anyones standards that is very poor but hardly surprising considering his negative tactics of playing the game, like i said its simple he is well out of his depth at this club and the sooner he is gone the better for all concerned as god help us with our fresh start we dont need him squandering our budget in january.

  • Eric says:

Like many LFC fans, I do feel that it’s time for Hodgson to go cause he’s just not up to the job. But I really can’t believe that some fans want the team to lose so Hodgson can be sacked and we can get a new manager. It’s ridiculous.

I like quite a few was not happy with Roy as manager of Liverpool. However he is and I’ll be damnbed if i’m going to wish the manager fails just to say I told you so!!! I sincerely hope Roy proves myself and the rest of you know it all modern fans wrong for the sake of the club.

    • jono659 says:

I am not by any stretch a “Modern fan”. I have been following the boys since we were old 2nd division. As to Hoping Roy proves us wrong, well that really depends what you mean. He may well prove us wrong in that we win mathes here and there, or move us out of the relegation zone but is that what we want?

I don’t want to be proven right or wrong on this issue, what I want is the best possible manager for the finest club in the world. Roy Hodgson is not it.

    • marshy says:

Modern fans? I’m 56, a scouser and season ticket holder who has been going to Anfield since I was 6 years old. I have absoloutely no faith in Hodgson, and little repsect for him. His whole presence is negative, from defensive tactics, poor substitutions, praise for every team and manger we play and his disrespectful comments about my club’s players. He’s at it today implying that Babel is not worthy of being included as a forward player. His antics on the touchline are embarrassing. I never want to see Liverpool lose, but each stuttering win will keep this joker in his job just a little longer, enough to inflict more harm on the Club e.g. the signing of more useless players in the Poulsen and Konchesky mould and lowering morale with his risible interviews. I want this guy out of my club asap. I trust that NESV will see the light and move the guy on to where he belongs – mid table comfort and snuggling up to his LMA mates.

      • RedMist!!! says:

Are you sure your a fan???

So let me get this right! I quote: “each stuttering win will keep this joker in his job just a little longer, enough to inflict more harm on the Club”!!!

Forgive me for NEVER wanting Liverpool to lose no matter who’s in charge! And as for Poulson and Konchesky, you cut your cloth accordingly! What do you expect for £4 and £5m. Macherano leaving and Insua being…well Insua was not of his making!

I like you never wanted Roy as a manager. However I unlike you will never disrespect an L.F.C. manager because that would make me a Spurs fan.

  • Mark says:

You are all so impatient. How can you judge the man after only 2 or 3 months. You sound like Newcastle fans. I feel like screaming every time I hear a so called fan calling for Roy’s head. I’m not saying he is or he isn’t right for the job, and this isn’t about being loyal to the club. It’s just basic common sense. For the good of the club you need to give managers time. 3 months just isn’t enough. What happens if we get a replacement in and he doesn’t do well? Get rid of him in the summer. Get real will you. Roy needs 2 years minimum. We aren’t going to get relegated so relax, get behind the team and let’s give him a chance to prove you right or to prove you wrong. It’s totally childish and lacking in any sort of reason to judge a manager after so short a period of time. Grow up!

    • terry says:

mark sorry to say that you need a reality check mate, roy is obviously the wrong man for the job wheter it be for 2or3 months or years, i dont blame him for becoming boss what average mid table manager wouldnt want to manage lfc, he was put there by the old regime, the new owners have no affinity with him whatsoever, the time is right now to bring in their own man who then can take stock of what is requied in january and next summer and having already seen the type of player that roy does attract such as poulson and konchesky then god help us if the budget was left to him to spend, mark you say we wont go down all i can say is look what happened to leeds and take on board robbie fowlers comments that the leeds side that did go down were better than liverpools team of today, roy hodgson’s record away from home is at best very poor in the prem,he’s played 66 times winning just 6 away from home with blackburn, fulham & liverpool so if you dont find that in its self very worrying then im afraid you do need a reality check.

  • JAMES says:

Did n’t we hear all this talk when Rafa took over from Gerard Houllier that the squad and the youth and reserve team set up was no good I think Rafa turned that around and the capture of Rodolfo Borrell the U18 Coach from Barcelona(inesta, messi, fabragas to name a few) will pay off any of Rafas mistakes 100 times over with the quality of player coming through in the end Rafas first 11 of 08/09 was just as good as any 11 in the premiership should of traded Alonso for VD Vart or Wesley Snider.

  • Mark says:

Also he did get Switzerland up to 2nd in the FIFA rankings.

As for people criticising his attitude and personality; I guess that is because he is humble, carries himslef with dignity and doesn’t lower himself when other managers get involved in petty sniping. You’d all prefer a loud mouth.

Very frustrating. We need to get back to being a properly run club and properly run clubs don’t make knee jerk decisions after only three months, and they should wecome the fact that their manager conduct himself with a bit of class.

    • Redtrev73 says:

Check ‘humble’ woy’s comments on rijkaard and mealy mouthed sniping about the quality of the previous incumbent’s transfer dealings and then revise your opinion on cuddly uncle Roy. The man is NOT LFC. End of

      • Erin says:

Spot on. Check today’s opinions on Kenny Dalglish as well.
May i also present you a manager who calls half of his players as being substandard B team.

  • T says:

The majority of feeling (whether it is justified or not) comes from fans who still feel aggrieved at Hodgson’s predecessor not being in the Anfield hot-seat.

Uncle Roy is a nice individual and I have nothing against him personally and never will. I do however agree with the sentiments of the author of this article in that he is unsuited to his current role at Liverpool and I doubt very much if he will improve the team (and by extension these days due to finances the club) during his tenure.

  • pete says:

While I agree with you point akin to cutting ones’ nose to spite the face maybe the reasons for this lies elsewhere.
Could it be that the owners and executive who ran Liverpool in the last 3 years including to a certain extent some of their appointees who may have since redeemed themselves on the business front by helping rid of the old owners dint listen to fans that’s kinda forcing people to wish for the only reason that would make it untenable for the manger to hold on to his position.
There was an uproar on many micro-blogging sites when it became known he was a favoured choice to take over Liverpool and he has then since come in and confirmed why many fans didn’t want him in the first place.
It has to be remembered that Liverpool fans have been restive and at open war with the club custodians so that mentality will not change quickly as their demand for a new manager goes unheeded and may end up tainting the new owners as carrying on the legacy of ignoring the fans.
I believe the fans need a bit of love to break with the disaffection they have had to live with for 3 long years.
If our manager had been winning or at least not sent us into the relegation zone I would still be saying the same points about him not being a popular choice but may have had to para-phrase my opinion with ‘UNFORTUNATELY for him’.
He took on a poisoned chalice given fan opinion and talked about pass and move to appease fans who wanted an attacking type of football but did exactly the opposite from day one, spade in the ground within 60 days certainly found itself a quotable quote bedfellow courtesy of the new manager.
This is taking fans or granted that bemuses fans were people in charge at the club say what they know people want to hear without any intention ayt all of doing what they declare.
I feel this is part 2 of the Liverpool saga of the last 3 years which will end very sadly for the manager who us now in a no win situation.
Judging from what Carragher was saying that Liverpool were upsetting other clubs which was no good, I guess the club management feeling was to bring in a manager who pleases everyone else but the fans.
All he really needed to do was say and do things to win fans over but he thought getting good press over having a good rapport with fans was better.
The media will soon tire of him and start tearing him down, a trend already in motion with some reporters are already stating the obvious.
The new owners need to realise fans needed a top-down change not just window dressing which keeps aspects best consigned to history. At least the top is addressed, the manager and playing staff need to be remedied as well and that’s still a work in progress whereas many fans feel there certain aspects of this that needs swift action.

  • red2death says:

I’m one of those who wouldn’t mind the team losing if it means Hodgson getting the sack. To put it simply, do the math: If one win gets him 2 more games in charge, we perform badly, and on third game when he’s on the brink again he gets another win, buying him another 2 games. If that continues, Liverpool will be relegated.

The question is, of course, where do you draw the line? When do you say “Ok, I’ve seen enough, I have no confidence that this manager can do well at Liverpool”? For me, that line has already been crossed with Hodgson. At best, I see him getting us to the Europa League every season, perhaps 4th spot and a CL place. At worst, relegation. If we’re thinking long term, 4th is just not good enough. Can you imagine Hodgson coaching a title-winning side? I can’t. A gutsy side that tries hard and holds its own against the ‘big boys’, yes. Hodgson lifting the Premiership trophy? I can’t even fathom it. And that’s why after 20 years of never calling for a manager’s head, I’m now calling for Hodgson to go.

  • Tracey says:

I never want us to lose matches, lets make that point clear first of all. However, you have to make a decision on whether Hodgson is the right man or not. Yes, he’s a nice guy… but that’s not what is at issue.
As red2death says above, “Where do you draw the line”? In my opinion the line is already crossed. He’s a small team manager with low ambition, and every time he makes a statement, he makes that very clear.
Yes we won at home to Blackburn… lets hold a party… Liverpool beat Blackburn at Anfield whoopy doo! The only other team we have beaten this season is WBA.
Lets not fall into a trap of extending chances on the back of one good performance. He either goes or he stays. Neither is my decision, but if it was, he would have gone last Friday.
I backed Rafa, I backed Houllier, but I can’t get it into my head that Roy would win anything.
He’s a nice guy out of his depth…

  • Jackdude says:

Karl Thyer- its simply a philosophical question. Do we want him to lose and be seen as treachorous so he will get sacked or do we support him and prolong the agony. Not to mention the slim chance of relegation. I think you have missed the point a bit.
If he was a world class manager and was going through a bad phase then I would support him. The premise being he has the innate ability to get some results. You see no matter how much you pray, wish or will it to happen a road car will never ever win a formula one race. A formula one car that is near the back has still a chance of winning given some good luck and good driving. Roy hodgson is a mondeo trying to win a formula one race. It just won’t happen. So if the only way to get rid of him is to wish him to lose and so prevent the slim chance of relegation or the real chance of star players leaving if this hemorraging carries on then its probably beneficial to see him to lose.

  • tee somethang says:

you know why ppl would want the team to lose? its becoz that is the only way the owners and maybe roy himself will see his shortcomings.if we win like wat happened against blacknurn, ppl will start saying hey he is good.but the truth of the matter is he is not good for our team he is too small for our team, cant coach right, cant speak right, cant field the players in their positions.he thinks liverpool is fulham.to tell u the truth if he were at fulham and he was in this position, nobody would be saying anything, afterall its fulham, they will maybe manage to squeeze thru and avoid relegation.this is liverpool, a team that should be fighting at the top not fighting at the bottom.and hodgson has no problem with that becoz he is used to mediocrity at fulham and such teams.in any event, who said taking fulham to the uropa finals means he is good.the uropa lig is a tournament and not a marathon competition like the lig race.its easy for a coach to plan for these one off uropa games.it also depends on the teams your team meets along the way.you dont become good becoz you have won or reached the finals of some knockout tournament. You are right, if we had kenny dalglish or rikaard,we wouldnt be attacking him,u know why? becoz he would be playing attacking football,he would be instilling confidence in the players becoz of his records and the trophies he won.wat does roy show our players, huu? ,maybe he says ‘ i went to the final of the uropa lig with fulham,i coached in finland, blablaha” will this inspire steve g and toress, even poor dirk kuyt? roy should go away, yes he is english but he must go now.thats why i would rather have the team lose hoping that maybe the powers that be will finally see this loser for wat he is.if he wins,we will be stuck with him and i am convinced that we wont win things with him.all fans are with me on this one, this i know for sure.is there some fan who thinks roy will lead us to silverware?

  • daboy says:

Liverpool need a manager who can attract some of the best young talent from abroad as well as at home Roy is no Wenger.
Roy’s recruiting extends to the local bowling club where he is getting his players ready for their pension.
Yes he believes in himself but his methods just do not befit a top side or a side building its way up there.
I believe Pellegrini is the man who can scout and attract some fine young players, and mould this team into a powerhouse with an attacking brand of football.

  • dee says:

HONEYMOON OVER FOR ROY was d heading of a local tabloid after our defeat to man city. This is liverpool ofr God sake not fulham or crystal palace with due respect. The xpectations at this club is much lower than what is xpected here.
A survey was carried out on dis site n almost 90 percent wants roy out not bcos of result but tactics. If there are glimpses of a bright future it would have been a different case but its all doom n gloom, poor n defensive tactics for a top 4 team. Players unhappy with mike kelly our first team coach according to reports. Imagine how we celebrated a narrow 2.1 win over blackburn like a league cup. No body i mean on one is 100 percent confident of good football n 3 points over bolton tomorrow n u want to allow dis for 2 years. God forbid

  • Erin says:

    Guys,
I can never in a million years wish for my team to lose. Never. I wanted Roy to be a success. OK OK, i went through the stages of i dont believe this/I hope is not true/ alright, fine, give the man a chance etc…is very clear now he had his chance.
Roy is a very very negative and naive manager.
Talking about the ”B” team? Great way to kick any confidence left out of their system .

Every time he opens his mouth, makes me feel angry. He does not believe in the team. (Why should the team believe in him?)Guys, another question. Why does he mentions Fulham all the time? i am intrigued, we are playing Bolton today. where does Fulham comes into all this. (read his interview)

Statistics, 8 out of 11 players that played against Blackpool and Everton and Blackburn played against Man U at the old toilet and beat them. 4 1 if i remember. Glen Johnson/Jo cole and konchesky have been added to it….Mascherano left. Pretty much the same team.

We have ended up with a manager due to the British media and their desperation to have an English manager in a top club. I feel really hurt that it happened to my club.
I hope our lads win the remaining games. every single one of them. I really do.
If i was the owner. I would get Roy to seat down. Have a league table and a mirror next to it.

The vast majority of the 1000’s of fans who are voting in polls have never been to England never mind put their hands in their pockets to pay for the team they supposedly support.

I’m a paying customer, I’m also supporting Roy all the way, at least until the day NESV decides to part company, and wether Roy has a losing and is on the bottom of the table or a winning record and he’s in 1st 2nd place, doesn’t matter 1 iota, I support because I want to give my support and even more through bad times.

You know there’s a reason why we sing

    Walk on, through the wind
    Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

And that reason is why everyone, wether you like or not, should get behind the manager and the team and will them on to suceed.
