The one thing you wouldn’t expect from Roy Hodgson . . .

|

Jamie Carragher was forced to play at left back for the first time in god knows how long after injuries to four other options, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Martin Skrtel formed the centre back partnership. While Soto doesn’t have a great deal of space, Skrtel has been out of sorts all season and Jamie Carragher hasn’t been on his best form either making it even more challenging for him to play left back. Most of the criticism though must be levelled at Glen Johnson. He was at fault for both goals, allowing Luke Varney to cut inside him before scything the player down for a penalty while keeping Varney onside for the second goal just before half time.

If there is a better case for moving him to right midfield I can’t think of one, but Glen’s display typifies the lack of confidence and cohesion in the team at the moment. For this, the fault must lie with the manager. Roy has looked a dishevelled and frustrated figure in recent times, and although he has faced such tough situations before, he needs to keep his head and use the experience he possesses to get this team out of their current predicament. The players at the back, and throughout the team, are shadows of their former selves, but if Roy doesn’t find his crucial ingredient, organisation, he will certainly be out of a job.

The next game after the international break against Everton is now a crucial one. Not only does he get a perfectly timed break from club football to reassess his tactics, he also has a passionate encounter to get both the team motivated and the fans to back the team. He needs to, for his and the club’s sake, pull something out of the fire for this derby match and the games to come.
