This fearless youngster shows why age should be no barrier

|

It does take some players years to mature, both technically and mentally, but for others their natural abilities can just shine through straight away. You don’t have to look far for a prime example as to how a youngster can thrive on a world stage at a young age. Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole made his debut for West Ham at the tender age of 17 before becoming the club’s captain at the age of just 21.

Although dissimilar in style in some ways, Jonjo Shelvey does share the history of our now older, more experienced former teenage prodigy. He made his debut at Charlton aged just 16 years and 93 days, making him the youngest player ever to play in the first team for the London club. He was named the team’s player of the season in his first full year in the first team in 2008/09 before becoming an integral player for Charlton in the club’s League One campaign last season. Likened to Steven Gerrard as a box to box midfielder, he can play in the hole just behind the striker or as an attacking midfield player and has a good passing range, shooting abilities and physical presence.

Clearly from his display in Naples on Thursday, he also loves a big occasion and relishes playing under pressure; a fantastic omen for the future. He said after the match last week:

“I want to push on more now and get a few games under my belt. Hopefully I will get another chance soon. I’m not really someone who gets nervous and I have got faith in my ability. I know I can do a job and I’m desperate for another go.”

Ambition, ability and mental strength, as well as youth on his side, Jonjo Shelvey could have a shorter time to wait for regular first team opportunities than a lot of people might think.

    Nice piece.

Wilshire’s doing the business at Arsenal, and James McArthy doing well at Wigan, so I don’t see why JJ shouldn’t be given the chance. He’s definately got the potential, and psychologically he’s strong. One of the few positives so far this season!
