TOP TEN Greatest Liverpool Strikers

|

6. Kevin Keegan – Andy Beattie, Bill Shankly’s former team-mate at Preston told Shankly repeatedly that Keegan was going to be a fantastic player. After such a constant appraisal from his friend, Shankly relented and signed the player. Four days before the start of the 1971-72, Shankly picked Keegan in a training match at Melwood. The legend goes that Keegan impressed so much that Shankly had little choice but to give the player his debut against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on the opening day of the season. He scored after 12 minutes and after scoring 3 in 5 league games, it was clear to all a talent had emerged. He formed a potent attacking partnership with John Toshack which helped Liverpool to 3 League championships, a European Cup and two UEFA Cups.—–

7. Gordon Hodgson – The South African was an all round sportsman who on top of being one of Liverpool’s greatest strikers, also played cricket for Lancashire and was also a talented Baseball player too. During his 11 years at the club, he amassed an incredible 241 goals, and in the 1930-31 season scored 36, the highest number in one campaign until Roger Hunt broke the record in the 1960s.—–

8. Billy Liddell – Billy Liddell scored a magnificent 229 goals as a winger during his long spell at the club. He joined Liverpool FC as a 15 year old in 1930 and remained at there until 1960. He was most often used as a left winger, but he also played as a striker for his attributes of strength, power, pace and shooting ability made him ideal for either role. The 50s were particularly dark days for the club and his ability shined through all the doom and gloom. Such was his influence, Liverpool were nicknamed “Liddellpool”.—–

9. Harry Chambers – Signed by legendary manager Tom Watson during the First World War, Chambers had to wait until 1919 to make his debut for the Reds. He topped the club’s goalscoring charts for five seasons in a row during the early twenties helping Liverpool to back-to-back league titles in 1922 and 1923. He struck up an excellent partnership with Dick Forshaw who also had an excellent goalscoring record for Liverpool.—–

10. Michael Owen – Due to his subsequent move to Manchester United, it would be difficult to put Owen further up this list, but in his time at Liverpool he scored an impressive 158 goals in 297 appearances before Rafa Benitez sold him in 2004 with a year left on his contract. An excellent goal-scoring record for England too but some Reds fans will not forgive his move to the team in Manchester.—–
