TOP TEN Most Expensive Liverpool flops

|

6. Ryan Babel – Bought for £11.5m from Ajax, the young forward was seen as one of the most exciting players in European football. After the best part of three years on Merseyside though he has failed to fulfil his potential and Roy Hodgson has given him until January to prove his worth to the team. Played against West Ham for Liverpool reserves this week.——-

7. Nicky Barmby – Controversially moved across Stanley Park from Everton for £6million, the England international never really found the form he had at Everton and after two seasons he was sold to Leeds United for £2.75million. At the grand old age of 36, Barmby is still playing for Hull City in the Championship.——-

8. Andrea Dossena – Bought for £7million from Udinese, Dossena replaced outgoing left back John Arne Riise for the start of the 2008/09 season. It was apparent from very early on that he was more comfortable in the final third than defending at left back. A highlight of his time at Liverpool was when he scored the fourth goal in a 4-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Sold to Napoli in last January’s transfer window.——-

9. Djibril Cisse – Bought for a sizeable sum by outgoing manager Gerard Houllier, Cisse never really fulfilled his promise despite flashes of brilliance and speed. New manager Rafa Benitez deployed him in a wide right role on a number of occasions and he broke his leg against Blackburn Rovers early in his time at the club, which didn’t help matters, but it would be hard to argue that he was worth the £14million the club paid for him. He now plays for Panathanaikos. ——-

10. Albert Riera – Cost the club around £8million from Espanyol, the Spanish left winger had a decent first season as the club finished second in the table. He offered the team width on the left hand side and also contributed some goals. His second season was less than impressive though as he was left out of team and he criticised manager Rafa Benitez’s management. Was sold to Olympiakos by Roy Hodgson this summer. ——-

how is Alberto Aquilani not number 1, he has done nothing in his liverpool career

  • Barp77 says:

    Barmby wasn’t a flop.

  • Shadowdancer says:

Cisse and Babel on this list?Obviously the author of this garbage doesn’t take facts into consideration.
Cissé was incredibly unlucky with horrific injuries, breaking his leg on two occasions after joining the Reds yet he still managed 24 goals in 79 appearances.Babel has never been given a consistent chance to prove his worth unlike the other garbage churning their inept displays week in week out.How is giving the lad 15 minutes of league football from 7 games this season going to help him prove himself before christmas? Hodgson is an idiot.

Agree with shadowdancer and the view that Cisse wasn’t a flop and with Babel not given a decent run it would be hard to classify Babel as one as well. In addition I don’t think Aquilani was a flop either considering that he was one of our best performers towards the end of last season when he actually got game time. Roys decision to loan him out when finally injury free still baffles me to this day, not least considering the creative shortcomings we are currently suffering

  • john finnegan says:

How can Babel not be a flop, stevie g had to tell him get of the floor when he spit his dummy out, or have we forgot the cameras when stev told him get of th fkg floor.
he about as much use as a 4 week corpse in a 100 n dash
    he got no heart

  • Not babel says:

Babel was given numerous chances at starting but mostly failed to make an impact. how many more matches can we afford to waste by playing him? how many more years can we wait for him to reach his so-called “potential”? i used to defend him but not anymore. he is neither a fighter, nor he is proud to wear the red shirt for our club. he is so disappointing, and I’ll say ship him out asap!

  • Eric says:

I don’t agree. Cisse was not a flop, he scored 26 goals in 83 games, scored in the penalty shootout victory over AC Milan in the UCL final in 2005, scored the opening goal in the FA Cup final in 2006. And for Babel, I think he had a decent debut season and since then both Rafa and Hodgson hasn’t really given him a chance to impress. If he plays more regularly, with his speed and strength, I think he can be a quality player.

  • paul says:

    Barmby a flop????

    who writes these things

if memory serves me right didn’t he score loads of european goals one season

  • Lfc4life says:

if riera is the best you can come up with then we have done pretty well…
He contributed more often than not!

Riera wasn’t a flop… he was an idiot!

  • Ateekster says:

I am a diehard Liverpool fan. What makes me sick is people always talking about the past. Past Glory, Past Players, Past Managers. Past HISTORY! Wake up! Chelsea are creating history, Tottenham are creating History, Man Scum are creating History! It’s stupid to keep going back to our ancient history!!! When will be start taking the blame and rise up as men and actually start WINNING and stop WHINING!

  • Ateekster says:

Typo there, replace “be” with “we”. I got over exited lol.

  • Chris says:

Sad to see Aquilani on this list. Clearly an incredibly talented player who just wasn’t fancied by Hodgson. His one-touch football and vision caused me to be baffled when Hodgson saw fit to loan him out (basically get rid) and replace him with Meireles and Poulsen. Then for him to stick Meireles on the right is just confusing. Hmm…
