A Welcome Surprise from Roy at White Hart Lane

|

Perhaps Roy has been trying to play solidly away from home, establishing a defensive base, but it has seemingly led to displays both equally inept both front and back. With the Reds conceding and losing games away without so much of a wimper, perhaps Roy felt the best approach was to have a go, and if they play like this away in future they will win more than they will lose. They were certainly unfortunate to lose yesterday and would have won if they had taken their chances.

Conspiring to miss the great opportunities presented to them at the end of the first half and at the start of the second, Spurs’s confidence levels grew as they realised that despite playing below par in the first half, they had a chance of getting something from the match after seeing they were only 1-0 down. Just like the second half comeback against Arsenal, they sprung into life and pushed Liverpool back, and the Reds defence crumbled once more, although Skrtel was unlucky to concede an own goal, Spurs also missed a penalty and had a goal ruled out for offside. Konchesky was however at fault for the second goal, and if the Reds are to progress up the table, they will need a better defensive line. The injury to Jamie Carragher won’t help matters in this regard but hopefully in the coming weeks, with the return of Daniel Agger, hopefully some solidity can return.

On the attacking front however, if Torres can put his chances away and Meireles continues to improve playing central midfield, IF we continue playing this positively, we will surely get the rewards that the team deserves. Some cause for optimism I feel.

Positive – Hodgson sent out the team with much more attacking intent from the beginning
Negative – Hodgson was content to have his team sink back and allow Tottenham to dominate the second half, and did nothing to try to take any attacking initiative back

Positive – the league is still pretty tight so it’s still easy to climb places quickly
Negative – the top 5 are stretching away from us, and the gap may be insurmountable by the time a manager with some real ambition (hopefully Riijkaard) is brought in

Positive – Maxi & Kuyt must be close to losing their positions on the wings
Negative – Those positions will just be rotated with other unsuitable candidates in Cole, Meireles & Aurelio, with Babel & Jovanovich neither even being viewed as options upfront or out wide

I have been a Liverpool fan for 33 years and remember when the club had genuine world class players like Hansen, Souness, Dalglish and Rush. It is ridiculous that Carragher, Gerrard and Torres are labelled as world class. These 3 are holding the club back. Liverpool could have got 70 million for Torres and Gerrard in the summer but were afraid to sell them because the fans were whining so much. Even Darren Bent has scored more goals than Torres this season. If Torres is so brilliant how come he rarely scores for Spain? He is never going to get back the lightning pace that he once had and he knows it. He has no left foot and rarely scores a headed goal. The team has played better football in the last 2 games without Gerrard.
