Where does Kenny fit into Liverpool’s new way of thinking?

|

If we see Kenny Dalglish being something of a permanent ambassador for the club, who has a say in its future direction, then the appointment of Comolli could see him sidelined if we want Kenny to be the Reds’ guiding light. Certainly he could revert to his role with the Academy but as Roy Hodgson said, Kenny should have an important role to play at the club, and while Roy maybe happy to have someone like Comolli to take some of the responsibilities off him like he is used to with a Sporting Director on the continent, will Kenny be as important as he appeared to be at the start of this season, scouting players and giving Roy advice? In another article, I supported the idea that Kenny could become something like a “Philosopher-King,” basically someone who dictates the philosophy of the club and has a say in management appointments as well as other important changes at the club.

Like Johan Cruyff at Barcelona or Franz Beckenbauer at Bayern Munich, Dalglish could be a mentor figure for the coach and the owners of the club. When Joan Laporta was appointed president of Barca in 2003, he was constantly on the phone to Cruyff who gave him advice about which players to sign and who to appoint as manager. Cruyff had a big part to play in appointing both Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola as manager. Although a similar process seemed to be intended for Kenny this summer when he was involved for a time in deciding Liverpool’s manager, the arrival of the new owners, of Comolli, and a new philosophy, may just diminish Dalglish’s influence. I just wonder how much contact the new owners have had with Kenny. Dalglish has so much experience in the game and Henry and NESV should be tapping into it on a daily basis to help move this club in the right direction both on and off the pitch.
