The image of today’s footballer is the one of a young man with too much money spending it on fast cars and page 3 models. Now in some cases this is a fair assessment but there are a few with a more eccentric side. We highlight ten footballers who lead very bizarre lives away from the football field, be it as a hobby or a second job. Below is a selection of what I call the new modern footballer.

1. Ryan Babel – Liverpool flop Ryan Babel may have found it hard to find his feet at Anfield, he has had no problem on the microphone. Babel has a studio at home and has put out a number of records under the name Rio, including one collaboration with his Holland international team-mate Royston Drenthe.

2. Roman Pavlyuchenko – Since October 2008 the Russian has sat on the city council of the city of Stavropol, not far from his birthplace in Southern Russia. he 26-year-old secured a seat on the regional council as his party won 63 per cent of the vote in polls in the Russian south. The striker missed three days of training in 2008 to travel to the remote Russian city to fulfil his role as a local politician.

3. Theo Walcott  – It’s not everyday you get a footballer releasing a book. Well ok at this time of the year it is but this is different. Inspired by the heroes in his favourite bedtime stories, Arsenal striker Theo Walcott, aged 9¾, has written a series of kids’ books whose lead character is loosely based on the forward himself. His good guy image has brought his plaudits from many in the children’s literature world.

4 – Phil Mulryne – The ex Manchester United player Philip Mulryne, who won 27 caps for Northern Ireland,  began training for the priesthood in 2004.It is understood he was invited by the bishop of Down and Connor to enter the priesthood.

5. Patrice Evra – If you have seen the clips on YouTube you will know what we mean. Patrice Evra is a clown. However, it is now official – Patrice Evra wants to write a sitcom with team mate Park Ji Sung.
