Hodgson’s defence just doesn’t add up

|

In light of the criticism that was inevitably levelled at beleaguered Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson during the live interactive show on LFCtv the previous evening, Mr Hodgson was yesterday asked about the guarded defence of his credentials offered up by John W Henry and Tom Werner. His response included the following observation:

“The only team with better results than us over the past five or six games is Arsenal or Manchester United. If you take the last five or six games we are right up there in terms of results. They (the owners) used the same terms as I would. If you ask me whether results this season over the 17 games we have played are acceptable and is that what you expected when you came to Liverpool Football Club, then I’d say ‘no it’s unacceptable and I expected much better.”

Obviously these statistics must be held to scrutiny as Roy is using them to justify his position and (supposed) progression in recent weeks. Looking at the records of each Premier League club over their last six matches throws up the following points accumulations:

1. Manchester United 14pts
2. Arsenal 12pts
3. Manchester City 12pts
4. Tottenham Hotspur 12pts
5. Bolton Wanderers 11pts
6. Stoke City 11pts
7. Sunderland 9pts
8. Blackpool 9pts
9. Blackburn Rovers 9pts
10. Aston Villa / Liverpool 7pts

So over the previous six games far from only Man United and Arsenal having a superior record to Liverpool Football Club, almost half the clubs in the Premier League exceeded their points total. In the interests of fairness it must be pointed out that Hodgson stated “last five or six games” so the same exercise should be undertaken over a five game period. During this period the list looks scarcely better for Roy:

1. Manchester United 11pts
2. Manchester City 11pts
3. Tottenham Hotspur 11pts
4. Bolton Wanderers 10pts
5. Arsenal 9pts
6. Sunderland 8pts
7. Blackpool 8pts
8. Stoke City 8pts
9. Liverpool / WBA / Blackburn / Birmingham / Wolves 7pts

So over their previous five matches eight sides have amassed a greater points total than the men from Anfield, whereas only seven sides have fared worse. I do not intend to append any conclusions or agenda to this piece, merely to point out the anomalies in Roy Hodgson’s statement. A statement which was included on the official Liverpool Football Club website, without any corrections. The comments were also part of the pre-match press conference for the Utrecht match tomorrow evening and as such were picked upon by millions, including no doubt the men who hold the key to Mr Hodgson’s future, Messrs Henry and Werner.

Joe, you are such a bell-end. You must have one ugly wife/girlfriend/boyfriend given how easily pleased you are.

Suggest that when you actually have the football on, you go ahead and watch it!!

  • Dave Hughes says:

Firstly, Joe you must have submitted that comment in order to attract male attention!

Roy must make factually correct statements when talking to the world. He constantly makes strange/negative statements then sits on the bench with his head in his hands!!??

Out of his depth, out of his mind, get out of our club & take pooson and konchesky with you, before we are lost to a mid table mediocre existence because if we don’t improve our top plays will lose faith.
