Two more signs we are building a strong youth team

|

The signing of Swede Peterson is probably the most interesting out of the two. He had a three week trial period earlier this year and must have impressed the coaches enough for them to purchase the 16 year old. Peterson has been playing in the fifth division of Swedish football for Savedalens and the club has an average attendance of just 97 people. Although scoring an impressive 24 goals in 25 matches over two seasons after breaking into the first team at the age if 14, it’s still not saying much considering the standard of football he was playing.

According to reports though, he is a very technically gifted player, either playing in the hole behind the striker or part of a two man strike force. He is also described as a level headed player who spent an extra year in Sweden to develop his game rather than move abroad. This combination of technical skill and mental character must have impressed the scouts, as well as McParland and Segura, to purchase the player.

Yusuf Mersin, whose transfer from Millwall was officially announced today, is a 15 year old goalkeeper who has made appearances for Turkey’s U16 and U17 sides. Rated highly by Millwall goalkeeping coach Tony Burns and some fans are annoyed he was let go, but hopefully Mersin has the ability to make it at the top level. He will be following in the footsteps of David Amoo who also made the switch from Millwall in 2007.

Looking at the team that played against Notts County in the FA Youth Cup, the Reds U18s are building an impressive team. Along with Conor Coady, Suso, John Flanagan, Jack Robinson, Michael Ngoo and Raheem Sterling who all started, we also have Andre Wisdom who is another impressive youngster. Add Peterson and Mersin to the mix and it looks very promising for the future. Even if just one or two of these batch of youngsters make it to play first team football I will be happy, and with the standard of player at Rodolfo Borrell’s disposal, it looks optimistic that we can begin to nurture top young talent.
