What makes me proud to support Liverpool FC

The finest sight in football

Liverpoolfc.tv has asked the question “What makes you proud to support Liverpool Football Club?”

Where to begin? The list of trophies, the famous red shirts, the Kop, the European nights …. the list is endless. However one thing above all, makes me swell with pride at each and every game and at countless other occasions- our adopted club anthem ‘YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE’

At Liverpool’s last home game the new owners made the decision to allow free entry for youngsters to watch their team take on Utrecht in a ‘dead rubber’ Europa League group game. Although the match itself was a disappointing goalless draw, the one thing I am sure all those hordes of eager young supporters will have taken away with them was the ritual pre-match rendition of YNWA.

As is invariably the case on European nights the away supporters joined in heartily and as a result the club’s iconic anthem rang around the famous old ground in fine voice. I have been going to Anfield since the mid-sixties and although the song has been an ever-present ingredient at each and every one of my visits, I still feel a tinge of pride and emotion every single time it is sung.

Of course it has not always been the case. In the early sixties it was part of the pre-match routine for the top three chart hits to be played during the countdown to kick-off, and in the days of standing on the vast Kop terrace the crowd, having been in their places for an hour or so, would entertain themselves by singing along.  It was the time of Merseybeat and tunes of Cilla, the Searchers , the Beatles etc  would cascade down the steps of the Kop onto the Anfield turf. As fate would have it, Gerry and the Pacemakers had originally recorded You’ll Never Walk Alone as a b-side but when it was decided to release it in its own right it shot to number one and stayed there for four weeks, just as Liverpool were midway through their Championship winning season of 1963-4.

Not accepting being taken for a ride by H&G and Hodgson. Stand up for the club, get Hodgson out.

the list is far too long, it was because the liverpool fans were so proud of the cities musical success that they sang the beatles songs etc and the rest is history. before this the kop roar would raise the hairs on your neck, why diddnt everton fans sing the songs ? you see we are a special lot. what the kop sing today the country and then the world steals it tomorrow, the tunes might be old but the kop put words and meaning to them, the ashes crowd in melbourne were singing we’ve won it 5 times (different words)other sing the saints (only like a dirge)i could go on for a week.

  • stan howard says:

roys epitaph should be – he killed the kop.
i think we will have a good run unless we do his doom and gloom will overpower the whole club, only hope is a good run that takes his negative attitude with it. this team beat chelsea, outplayed arsenal and totenham but he has no ambition.

i can no longer stand this man he has brought a dark cloud over the club, we could even go down if this man who is afraid of the bottom team when we are at home. torres must be sold now every tuppence halpenny centre forward we play against makes him look totally lazy.
