Comolli: “The squad left by Benitez is good”

|

Liverpool Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli has told Canal+ Sport he is “convinced” that Rafa Benitez left a good squad:

“The match against Everton we deserved to win. This was not the case. Why? In my opinion, the team is still suffering from the accumulated fatigue of our players during the World Cup. And when you see the starting line-up, we see that eight players have gone to at least the last 16, and many have gone further. This team has quality. I am convinced that the squad left by Benitez is good, but it’s true that we need reinforcements.”

Comolli also revealed that there were many top quality players still interested in moving to Liverpool despite the club’s league position:

“I am surprised in a way, given our results, the number of top level players who want to join us. They say that Liverpool is an attractive club, and most are also telling me that ‘you’ve had a bad season, but you won’t have two’.”

Comolli also stated that they considered bidding for Darren Bent but felt he was too similar in style to Fernando Torres, and that he was relieved when the owners told him that there was money to spend:

“There is no more debt. The owners are willing to invest, there is plenty of money. When I first got here, the first question I asked was ‘do I have to lower the payroll?’ They said, ‘No, the important thing is to win.’ It was a great relief for me.”

This week it is Liverpool fan Caroline Wozniacki!

Bent similar to Nando? Do me a favour Bent is similar to Carlton Cole!

    • tom says:

To be fair bent has a lot better scoring record than Cole so don’t think you can talk 2 them in the same light, he is no torres though, and mainly works better of a target man, which is why he would not work with torres

shut up mate, if you new your football then you’d know Bent is a far better player than C. Cole, in any case, i’m sure what Comolli meant was that Bent is better suited to being the man leading the attacking line and Nando is exactly the same thus we didn’t bid for Bent. Simples!

what we need is a striker who can drop deep to get the ball then link up with Nando, hence we are being linked Suarez. GET IT!!!

      YNWA!!!

Still suffering from fatigue of the World Cup!? Ha ha ha, I guess that is the problem with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Oh wait, they are dong superbly!

its good but 3 top players short, it’s the youngsters rafa left us with that will secure a bright future. we have at least 3 future stars maybe even 4 or 5.

I fully agree with Comolli. To blame Hodgson’s results on Rafa’s squad is a joke. The team we have right now is full of quality but that is not to say that we don’t need reinforcements. We had Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Mascherano, Gerrard, Babel, Kuyt, Maxi, Jovanovic and Torres. 13 players at the World Cup. Other internationals include Insua, Degen, Lucas, Aquilani, Riera, Benayoun and El Zhar. Rafa left the squad with 20 internationals and a host of promising youngsters and I find it ridiculous when people say Hodgson inherited a poor squad from Rafa.

Liverpool FC are still a big club and one bad season won’t stop top class players joining the club. With new owners and King Kenny in charge and a host of world class players in the team, I believe we have no problem attracting top talent to join the club.

There are no worries. We will get back there from this bas season. I believe everybody in some way or another understands that and it’s onlt the daft buggers who think otherwise! Time will tell…

Yeah Rafa’s squad was not the best but good enough, but Roy was full of negativity. Rafa had a vision for the future with young players coming through, but lacked confidence to give them a first team chance, Roy on the other hand bought mediocre players buy swapping great talented players like Valle.
