Is he the NO.7 we’ve all been looking for?

|

In this regard, it can be safely assumed that both Liverpool Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli and manager Kenny Dalglish have done their homework. King Kenny said this about the player today:

“Our reassurance for supporters out there is that they are really determined to get the club moving forward and I think a great indication of that is the signing of Luis Suarez. He is a top-class player and somebody that they have put their hand in their pocket to bring in. He has been on the radar for a while so it’s somebody who has come in because we wanted him in to add to the squad that we have at this particular time and not as a replacement for anyone. He is in on his own merit and is in to play with the people that are here. We are really looking forward to seeing him put on a red shirt and play. Once the paperwork is finished, he will be doing that.”

What I particularly like about Suarez as a player is he is more than just a goalscorer. He loves coming deep for the ball to get involved in build up play and you will also see him on the flanks to put in crosses or to run at opposition full backs. From my point of view, he is the style of striker that befits the “number 7” that Liverpool have had in the past. Dalglish himself, Keegan and Beardsley all gave the team creativity as well as goals and hopefully Suarez can provide the team with that missing link between midfield and forwards.

There is no guarantee that this will be a success though. Suarez’s quick adaptation to the pace of the Premier League is crucial and hopefully he has a strong enough character and enough ability to make the transition as smooth as possible. Although the fee is pretty steep at £23million, he was worth closer to £30million after last summer’s World Cup and the Reds have done a good piece of business in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how Dalglish utilises the player. With the likely departure of Torres and the arrival of Andy Carroll for £35million, the pairing could be a blast from the past, a small tricky centre forward combined with a strong, aerially dominant striker. Let’s hope it works out for the club’s sake.
