A Statement That Shows Henry Has Really Been Listening

|

What better way to get the supporters on side than to get the team playing in the style they have grown accustomed to? As King Kenny was willing to takeover while Henry continued to increase his knowledge of the club and team, it seemed an ideal opportunity to get the team playing in a more attractive style, while stabilising the club at the same time. As Henry said himself, in hindsight, they couldn’t have made a “better choice.”

There is still somewhere to go and there was one slip in the interview when he called the club a “franchise,” a word more regularly used by the previous owners. In the end though it is just semantics, and the more he gets himself absorbed into the culture of the club, the more he will begin to speak in the language of English football. It looks as if from the outset though, Henry has not only paid lip service to the fans by saying he will listen. The club has set up a supporters committee which will meet 4 times a year to discuss supporter issues while his interview suggests that the style of play, rather than results were the final nail in Roy Hodgson’s coffin, suggesting that he was listening to fans who felt the same way about the former Fulham boss’s style of management.

In the interview he also expressed his admiration for Anfield, his knowledge of the rivalry between Liverpool and Man U with 18 league titles each, and also referenced to Hillsborough while praising Kenny Dalglish’s legendary status at the club and how the King was beloved by the fans “not just for what he accomplished on the field but off the field through some very difficult times for the club and supporters.” Henry maybe learning on the job but he is, along with his fellow FSG partners, now making the right decisions as well making all the right noises.

Around about the time of the take over I remember reading that NESV had been fans of Liverpool for a while. Apparently they had pictures of our various successes on their walls in Fenway Park long before the take over and even watched the Istanbul match regularly. It’s not just a 6 month old affair, I think they’re smitten.
