Kenny’s Inspiration Can’t Hide Our Fundamental Flaws

|

In addition, the absence of Daniel Agger through injury also may have inspired a change in formation from the 3-5-2 to the 4 at the back seen against Wigan. From this switch, Glen Johnson looked much less comfortable playing left full back than the wing back role he had been playing. With Maxi cutting inside from the left wing position in the second half, Johnson had a fair few opportunities to cross with his left foot, but he failed on more than one occasion to deliver a ball with any threat. Again, the necessity of playing Glen out of position with no other recognised left full back available indicates the lack of depth that Kenny will surely want to address in the summer.

Despite all of this, although the Wigan performance was somewhat disappointing, there were still many positives. Luis Suarez was excellent all afternoon but will definitely need support from a player such as Andy Carroll to excel, while Meireles again continued his great recent goal scoring record with a well taken volley. Progress is certainly being made but it is also very apparent where our faults lie. Hopefully we can have a good run in the Europa League, finish as high as possible in the league and address these issues in the transfer market in the summer.

suarez and meireles were the best liverpool players on the pitch and both were signed this year…
we badly need some quality signings in the summer, priority being wingers, maybe hazard or marin…

Thats what i said after the game. We got one goal scorer at the moment and thats Meireles. Stevie hasnt scored in a while either. We should stop playing Maxi who is poor. Rather give Pacheco a chance.

I guess you’ve all heard of Raheem Stirling’s exploits with the U18s against Southend – we may have three jewels in Stirling, Suso and Pacheco waiting to burst on the scene with Liverpool. Îf we can bring one of Eden Hazard, Alexis Sánchez or Marko Marin (in that order), together with a talented young forward to complement Carroll and Sánchez (Romelu Lukaku springs to mind) and a midfielder of the calibre of Stephen Defour or Christian Eriksen, things would really look up. Ah (I guess I am asking for a lot but there you go), we also need a new left-back and at least one more young centre-back to reinforce the backline.
