Our best January signing, and he didn’t cost a thing

|

As well Kuyt, Daniel Agger and most recently Jay Spearing have praised Clarke. The midfielder said:

“Under him (Clarke) the pace of training has changed. He wants us to do things quicker. That’s helped us to play at a better tempo in games.”

From the two quotes you can see two aspects of Liverpool’s training sessions under Clarke. There is look more “ball-work” being done on the training pitch rather than a focus on shape or positioning as there was under Hodgson. Work on “positional play in small spaces” as well as an increase the tempo has surely led to the greater cutting edge we have seen in Liverpool’s attack in recent weeks. While under Hodgson we had a lot of possession but didn’t have the ability to open up teams, under Dalglish and Clarke, we are using possession better playing at a higher tempo and with more precision in small spaces. Pace is crucial in the modern game and high speed attacks and counter attacks can catch out opponents.

This belief to move the ball quickly is fundamental to Dalglish’s philosophy and while King Kenny sets out the master plan, Clarke puts the small details into play. This is beneficial defensively as well as offensively though, as shown against Chelsea. The Reds were miserly at the back yesterday and Pepe Reina hardly had anything to do as the back three kept Chelsea’s attacking triumvirate, Torres, Anelka and Drogba, at arm’s length. The finger prints of the Mourinho/Clarke era Chelsea side were all over the Reds team yesterday. For these reasons, I would see it to be crucial that if Dalglish’s stay is extended beyond the end of the season, it is vitally important to keep Clarke at the club too. From the player’s point of view, the partnership seems to be working, and why change a good thing if it is working so well?

Good article, ive been singing Steve Clarke’s praises since he joined us and respected what he did at Chavski, he really has made an impact in a short space of time at the club and what hes doing on the training ground with Kenny and Sammy with the lads is really paying dividens on the pitch, keep up the great work done lads……YNWA

One of your writers last season said put Johnson on wing and I agreed with him. Most on here disagreed big time. Kenny’s done it – it worked – so the lad was right.

who’s paying 7mil for joe cole? you’re off your rocker son.
Sell pepe? seriously mate, get a hold of yourself, this isnt champ manager.

    • Zahid says:

Do you anything about the Liverpool and Utd rivalry, or are you one of them clueless fans, Liverpool will never sell to Utd especially one of our prize assets in Pepe. Besides Utd refused to Sell Heinze to us a few seasons a go and Pepe has said himself he wouldn’t go there.

However i hope im wrong but i feel Chavski could take Pepe off us aswell, Ancelotti is a huge fan of the guy, i know they have Cech but he hasn’t been the same since he got his head injury and wears that head protection as a security blanket. With Pepe you get a Goalkeeper, a sweeper, a guy who can set up goals, get you going on the counter and a leader……YNWA
