A £15m centre half who could make all the difference?

|

Perhaps more importantly, combined with his aerial abilities, he is also very capable of bringing the ball out from defence. A corner stone of the pass and move philosophy is to ensure that centre backs have the ability to play from the back and not resort to long balls. Currently out of the four centre halves at the club, only Daniel Agger has the wherewithal to be able to bring the ball out from the back and setup attacks for the Reds.

For a balanced backline, it would be beneficial to have to two no nonsense centre backs like Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel, alongside two “footballing” centre halves in the mould of Alan Hansen. With Daniel Agger’s tendency to have a number of injuries during the season, Cahill could very well be the ideal replacement alongside Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel, complimenting his defensive partner with a different style of play.

What I would like to see most though would be a partnership of Gary Cahill and Daniel Agger. Both capable in the air, and in the tackle, they both also will keep the ball on the floor and not give possession up too cheaply. If the Reds are to progress under Kenny Dalglish next season, to be able to dictate play against teams is crucial, and there is no better way than playing from the back. It would certainly be the Liverpool Way of playing, and it will be interesting to see in the summer whether Director of Football Damien Comolli and Dalglish prioritise the need for another centre back. £15-20m is pricey, but Cahill could make all the difference to how the team plays.

It’ll cost over £20 million to sign Gary in the summer. Unless the scousers can rob a few banks in the meantime, i don’t think he’ll be going off to Self Pity City!

I work with two Bolton season ticket holders and am happy to accept their opinion of Cahill – that when it comes to positional sense, he hasn’t got a clue .

After all , he won’t be playing Ghana every week .

Excellent post! If he Cahill is available for 15m that would be a good addition. However, we also need Simon Kjaer (Wolfsburg is likely to ne relegated) and Camolli needs to get to work quickly. With the young ones (Wilso, Ayala, etc.) coming up, we should be fine. We need to offload those who have lost pace and confidence. Agger and Carra would make good squad players.

Besides a good LB and LMF (with pace and accuracy of crosses as criteria), we also need to address the vacum left by Xavi and Mascherano. M’Vila, Sissokho, Javi Hernandez, Gago or Matiudi should be considered. Lucas and Spearing need help and everyone seems to focus on AMFs only. If we add K. Honda to our midfield with Stevie, Meriles and Pachco, the attacking midfield will be sufficiently catered for and we can continue to add the youngsters.

I think we are OK on the front with Kuyt as back-up but we can consider offloding Ngong and getting O’Connor.

Since our requirements are very well known, Comolli should start commiting players now before the price war begins.
