Spearing & Suarez Start: Bet on a 1-0 win at 13/2!

|

Liverpool got their tactics all wrong in both legs against SC Braga in the Europa League, and they go into today’s match against Sunderland on the back of two very poor performances in Europe (Team sheet below). After beating league leaders Manchester United convincingly 3-1 a couple of weeks ago, no one would have expected the Reds to go out with a whimper against a team lying sixth, 30+ points behind league leaders Porto, in their domestic league. The team seems to have a very schizophrenic attitude recently, and you can’t say it is down to the difference in away and home form either, as they were equally abject against Braga at home as they were away.

The return of Luis Suarez today will hopefully improve Liverpool’s creativity problems. They never really looked liked scoring, other than from a header from Andy Carroll, against Braga on Thursday night and Reds fans will be hoping the Uruguayan can be the inspiration to get this team out of its recent malaise. The bizarre thing about Liverpool recently is that the players can seemingly get up for the big matches and perform, but against the smaller teams, especially away, they cannot really muster the same motivation and spirit. Hopefully that will change today as King Kenny will want to see a reaction after going out of the Europa League.

Andy Carroll also starts today and it will be interesting how he links up with Luis Suarez for the first time When Andy is fully fit, he will be a frightening prospect for opposition defenders but he must be utilised in the best way. I wouldn’t put it past the 22 year old scoring  today though.

Sunderland meanwhile are coming into this game in a run of bad form. They haven’t actually played since thje 5th March so they will be fresh, but they haven’t won since the 22nd January against Blackpool. They haven’t won at home since New Years Day, and were unceremoniously knocked out of the FA Cup by Notts County at home. They did however hold Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates last time out so I expect a tight game. Prediction: Sunderland 0 – 1 Liverpool.
