A Deadly Duo who deserve many of the plaudits

|

Many Reds fans have stated plainly that Jay “isn’t good enough” for the Red first team. Still, King Kenny has persisted with him and his faith has been rewarded. I would go as far to say that he performed better in the holding midfield role than Lucas did last night. One of the main aspects of his performance was his discipline to keep a good line with Lucas in the midfield while also being very economical in possession, playing the ball simply and quickly to others more capable than himself. Consistency is still a problem for Jay though as he mentioned himself in a recent interview. He was good against Sunderland and Man City but he went missing for large parts against West Brom, and hopefully with more games, his consistency level will improve.

Is Jay a player who can hold down a first team place on a regular basis though? Probably not, but I have high hopes for him to be a very useful squad player. One reason he is picked over Christian Poulsen is due to the fact he is quicker and can cover more ground on the pitch. Despite this, he does lack the physicality which is required for the Premier League. He did manage to keep the colossal Yaya Toure quiet for the majority of the evening but Jay was still out-muscled by him on at least one occasion when Yaya used his quick feet to ghost past him and the Ivorian held off 22 year old to shoot off target. For this reason I still feel we might need another differently styled holding midfielder who is both athletic and physically strong to replace the outgoing Christian Poulsen.

In summary then, if Lucas and Spearing can keep up such performances on a consistent basis, and crucially have help from their team mates, they should become a very potent midfield pair at least until the end of the season.
