Flanagan Starts: Bet on Liverpool to win 2-1 at 17/2

|

Liverpool go into tonight’s match against Manchester City after a pretty poor performance away from home against West Brom last week. Two things however favour the Reds tonight, they are playing at home and they are playing against a top four side. Both factors seem to favour a Reds win tonight as they go into the match off 5 matches unbeaten at home, while they always seem to have a knack of beating the top sides. Motivation never seems to be lacking for these encounters, and even without the likes of Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger, you feel they are still in with a good chance of winning.

Especially with the likes of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez up front (team sheet below), you cannot help but feel that the Reds will be able to carve out a few chances and that the pair will be right in the thick of the action. With the lack of full back cover however, the Reds backline is a bit of a concern, and so Kenny has decided to put in John Flanagan for his first team debut. Good luck Flanno!

For City, they are coming off a 5-0 win against Sunderland at home. It is doubtful however that Roberto Mancini’s side will play with the same freedom and attack mindedness at they did at home. The Italian manager’s negative approach away from home has seen his side lack any potency in front of goal in recent matches. Still, the Blues will be a big threat tonight. The likes of Carlos Tevez, David Silva and particularly Adam Johnson will be a danger to Liverpool’ defence. Johnson was only bought by City for £7million from Middlesbrough, and is looking the shrewdest piece of business that City have done in recent transfer windows. If only the Reds had seen the boy’s talent earlier then he could have been in the Red of Liverpool, instead of facing us tonight.

Currently, Manchester City sit fourth on 56 points, and will leapfrog Chelsea back into third with a victory tonight. The Reds meanwhile, sit sixth on 45 points, 11 points of a Champions League spot. Anything other than a victory tonight for the Reds tonight will mean even hope of a fifth place finish, and catching Spurs for the only Europa League place, is in doubt too.

With Spearing and Lucas once again holding the fort in midfield tonight, the main creative outlet will have to come from Raul Meireles. The Portuguese midfielder has not looked comfortable playing out of position on the wings, but let’s hope he can combine well with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, to conjure up a few goal scoring opportunities for both himself and the strike pairing. The Reds will certainly always be a threat with Carroll and Suarez, but let’s hope we give them the right service tonight. Match Prediction: Liverpool 2 – 1 Manchester City.
