The Trouble with Liverpool and Free Transfer Signings

|

He scored his first goal as a senior player in a 3-1 win over Auxerre in October 2006, coming on as a second half substitute, and despite not being a regular, he scored six goals in 32 appearances during the 2006/07 season. He again struggled to curry favour with Lacombe the following season though and made just 11 starts in the league, scoring his only goal of the campaign in the UEFA Cup against Lokomotiv Sofia.

The 2008/09 season was equally as unfortunate for Marveaux as after tearing his hamstring in October, it was discovered that a haematoma had formed around the injury and he had to have an operation that kept him out for five months, limiting him to just 6 appearances during the campaign. Last season was however Marveaux’s breakthrough season, and he scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists in 35 league appearances under new manager Frederic Antonetti.

This campaihn has however seen him sidelined with injury again. He sustained a groin injury in November and despite returning to fitness in the New Year, the dispute over his new contract has meant he hasn’t played since his injury. The Reds have certainly had their fair share of injury problems with players, and if Marveaux does sign, this maybe a concern. Still I feel it is best not to judge before we see him in action for the Reds. He could very well be a useful squad player and he can play on the left hand side of midfield or just behind the striker as a playmaker. He will probably be on quite low wages and he is still only 25 years of age so he may not be in the same bracket as players such as the 30 year old Milan Jovanovic and 29 year old Joe Cole who have less resalable value if things don’t work out.

With the Reds recent history of failed free transfer signings, as well as the long list of players with recurring problems, the signing of Marveaux maybe a risk, and if he does sign, lets hope he proves to be the exception to the rule regarding dud Liverpool Bosman transfers.

In my opinion marveaux is not kind of players we need .i see the clip of milankakabaros .he is a good player but his power and phisical form is not enough for premier league. At last i hope i wrong about he .and must wait to see what happen in future.

  • Old Timer says:

Lot of concern that we may be bringing in another crock. No matter how good a player is (example Agger or Gerrard this season) he cannot help us if he cannot play! Lets face it, the EPL is a tough league to play in and any proneness to injury will quickly rear up. OK if he is a “spare” at left wing and we sign another class left winger, but if we are to rely on him, then I say dont sign him – the risk is too great to have him take the place of a better prospect such as Young and his ilk.

  • alex says:

    great foe bench!!

  • Red Indian says:

    i’m sceptical about signing him..
firstly, he seems too injury prone.. we have enough of those already..
secondly, he seems like an average player who has played all his football in the french league.. dont think he’ll cut it in the premier league..
but hey, he cant be worse than n’gog or jova..

  • hey fellow have trust in the man marvelous and try to think positively and i have the feeling that these will be our best bosman transfer but i hope even those who are responsible for signing must sign another talented and creative left winger

  • Jack says:

He’s not up to Champions league standard!! I think this is only media rubbish anyway.

  • Deco says:

Surely when discussing Liverpool free transfers Marcus babbel must get a mention. He was excellent at right back until his health problems laid him low. Also remember that voronin brought a 3 million pound transfer fee into the clubs coffers too. As for marveaux, I’m not exactly jumping for joy at the news but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, and hopefully he’ll give the squad a bit more balance as we are short of attacking left footers.

  • Kev says:

If its true it Will be an other winger that Will Turn as a dead wood… Hope it’s not true.

  • Mike roberts says:

You lot all with your negative comments ???? I agree the way this article has been presented it does not look too good , but this is journalism. It would be easy to make him look like a great signing ie …. Fergie has been tracking the guy for a while and also Chelsea , also his current club Want him to stay .
But most important in all of this is the fact that Kenny Dalglish and Damien comolli Want him !!!! I have faith in Kenny and comolli as I have seen how he has turned the club around this season and got players that we thought were crap , playing like we are title contenders . In Kenny I trust . YNWA .

  • Jimbo says:

You are right to be concerned about Marveaux. He is a very ordinary player indeed. Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or Man City would not even waste their time on someone this average. Is this how our new american owners plan to improve on sixth position ? They seem to have the same basic philosophy as our old american owners (ie. basing their transfer policy on whatever players happen to be available either on free transfers or for next to nothing while our rivals spend real money on genuinely good players). Haven’t Voronin, Jovanovic, Cole, Kyrkiakos and Konchesky taught them anything ?

    • Kenny says:

Are they interested in signing him now? No they are not which proves they know even on a Bosman that he is an injuryprone bum now.

      • Pedro says:

That’s not the point. The fact that they were interested tells that you that the guy isn’t down right terrible. Personally, if we are after a winger on a bosman, I’d go for Seb Larsson. Decent, proven Premier League player. Right footed though. This Marveaux chap is apparently more of an attacking mid who likes cutting in and isn’t a good crosser.

    • Eric says:

As you said, they were interested in signing him ‘a few years back’. Now, they’re not even interested in signing him despite the fact that he’s available on a free. What’s the point of signing a guy who can play only 10 games a season? And what’s signing an average-at-best Seb Larsson going to achieve?

      • Pedro says:

As I replied to Kenny, the fact that Utd. and Chelsea were ever interested in him shows that the guy isn’t or wasn’t that bad. He does have a pretty bad injury record and let me make this clear, I DO NOT want us to sign him. Regarding Seb Larsson, I said that we should go for him only if “we are after a winger on a bosman”. If Comolli and Dalglish want a winger on the cheap, then Larsson would be better than Marveaux in my opinion, that’s all I’m saying.

    Hey negative tossers…
He is 21 and free… a left winger which we do not have..All clubs are watching him but he chose liverpool because something in starting to happen..Suarez can make anyone around him look good.. even maxi and kuyt.. Lets welcome him and another left and right wing and full back and centre back.. Hopefully the young striker from Barca, but most off all lets spoend the cash on Alexis Sanchez the next Ronaldo but better… he playes with passion and commitment for th love of the came..
    SELL
    Janovic 5 million?
    Aqua 15 million
    cole 10 million?
    Johnston 10-15 million
    insua 5 million
    kon job 3 million
    poulson 3 million
nearly 60 million and a bit from the club maybe 80 million in funds..
Dalglish and comolli have not lets us down yet..
    GO REDS

  • Swilliams says:

Joel, firstly he is 25, not 21, and the bit about ‘Susrez can even make Kuyt look good’ is rubbish, Kuyt is a quality player, our best player of the season, and while Suarez has certainly improved our performances, to write off Kuyt’s form is unfair. I would like to sees get the prices you say for those players, however it’s unlikely, I doubt even Tottenham would pay £10m for Cole, or £15 for Aquilani.

  • Jack says:

Who in their right minds would pay 10mil for Cole!?

  • mr,comolli is trying to bring in france connection lfc because he was brought to ANFIELD he’s trying going to france watching france players that he will bring to lfc,why don’t comolli goes to portugues league and negociate for quality players that can give us what we lfc fans realy want in our club,he should go to fc,porto that played villareal he see players that matters like-FALCAO-HULK-GUARIN-RODRIGUEZ-MOUTINHO,most of the players being on free transfer are not all that good some are injury prone or bench warmers.

  • Swilliams says:

Miereles? I’m sorry, he had a good 6 week spell, but either side of that spell he’s been pretty average. Kuyt has been consistently good all season, and I reckon I watch more games than you seeing as every LFC game is on TV where I live. And of course Suarez is a quality player, but Kuyt’s form is a product of his ability, Suarez creates the space, but you still need good players to capatilise on that, which Kuyt is.
No one in their right minds will play £15m for Aquilani, although of course I hope someone is stupid enough to.

  • Listen says:

Just get Eden Hazard. It’d save a heck load of time instead of having reporters report about most of the players we get on a free being not capable to play in the EPL. Not to mention, it’d also save LFC fans from arguing with one another about who’s right and who’s not. -.-
