Why the Reds’ Top Midfield Target WON’T cut it on Merseyside

|

He makes an appealing transfer target because he’s entering into the last year of his contract with Blackpool and would be available at a cut-price. There’s every chance that Liverpool could pick him up for £6-8m – but just because he’s available for cheap doesn’t make him an essential target. Liverpool shouldn’t have to settle for less quality – they should seek out the best players available and that may well mean looking outside the Premier League.

It’s not like there is a shortage of talented young central-midfielders out there. What about Standard Liege’s Steven Defour or Rennes’ Yann M’Vila?

Charlie Adam was outstanding for the first half of this season – even carrying Blackpool at times when they needed to grab a result. He has a decent range of passes, works hard and gets goals (although many of his this season have come from the penalty spot). The second half of this season hasn’t been quite as productive for the Scottish international. Without consistency in his game, any Liverpool attempt to sign him would be a gamble.

Up until now, I haven’t seen the evidence I need to suggest that Adam is the kind of player that Liverpool need going forward. Will Adam really help the Reds challenge for the Premier League title once more? At this stage I haven’t seen enough evidence that he’s got the quality and consistency necessary.

I feel exactly the same. Especially when he really tries to make a difference for his team he starts playing badly.

Kenny seems to stick with the 4-4-2. If Gerrard plays we need another midfielder who can defend and has a decent range of passing. A combination of Lucas/Adam is what we need next to Gerrard. I feel Kenny can decide who that should be.

The Blackpool man’s rise to prominence has only really taken place in the space of the last 18-or-so months, twelve of which happened to take place in the Championship and thus can’t really be considered evidence that he has got enough quality to make it at Liverpool.

Swap blackpool for Newcastle and you’ve got Andy Carrol, but I didn’t see you write anything like this about him. Just saying…….

I actually don’t think we need Charlie Adam at all. Buy I’m happy to be proved wrong.

Carroll has a X-factor about him. As he proclaims, he isn’t just a one trick pony. Dangerous in the air as well as on the deck. Once he hits his peak, he will be quite a force at club and international level. Adam is decent at best. Wouldn’t mind him as a squad player but don’t see him making a real impact at Anfield.

dont want him any where near Liverpool, this guy just is not good enough

  • Pranav says:

He has a good left foot, a good dead ball delivery but inconsistent. People have been talking about how he can act like a deep playmaker because of his range of passing. But there are a large number of instances where he has overhit pass. The way blackpool plays, they move forward as soon as they receive the ball. The players have pace and more often you will find atleast 3 ahead of the halfline. Meaning when he shoots long even if a little stray, but in the right place players tend to reach the ball. Also he tends to move the ball as quick as possible long into forward areas rather than picking a close player. There are matches where he has been excellent but also ones where he has been anonymous apart from the odd 15 minutes or so. Could well turn out to be a good player but dont think he is the kind we need ATM.

There’s only one man for that Liverpool midfield ‘quarterback’ role- step forward Mr Alonso! John Henry would make me the happiest LFC fan on the planet if he went and got Xabi back

Liverpool should seriously stop targeting average-at-best British players like Charlie Adam. The guy is 25 but has just 9 caps for rubbish Scotland. This guy is not cut for the top level, just look at the game against Brazil where he was playing as a deep-lying playmaker, he got destroyed by the likes of Lucas. He might be a good passer of the ball but he is not the type of player that will help move the club forward. Even Blackpool fans don’t rate the guy as highly as you think since David Vaughan was voted their player of the season. Liverpool should be targeting better quality midfielders than Charlie Adam. The club should take a look at James McCarthy and Marek Hamsik.

totally agree, I would like more n’vila or Boudebouz, but would not rule gourcuff it seems that there is no future in Lyon for their
lack of consistency and I must admit that I have ever seen in the selection
France was just perfect, but liverpool need a way
    Defensive midfielder
