A Starting XI that should get Reds (and England) fans excited

There is a lot of talk around at the moment about FIFA home-grown quotas and UEFA Financial Fair Play Rules, and FSG made it known early on during the first few months of their ownership of Liverpool that they were taking into account these new directives. The significant spending by the Reds this summer maybe in no small part down to the anticipation of these rules coming into effect in the near future. For this reason, an investment in the Academy to produce local home grown players has been encouraged, as well as the purchase of top class home-grown talent. The eleven players that I’ve mentioned below could very well be first team players for years to come, and should get Liverpool (and perhaps some England) fans excited:

Tyrell Belford (GK) – Probably, at the moment, the least exciting player on the list but Belford is reserve goalkeeper for England at this month’s U17 World Cup.

John Flanagan (RB) – Had some very promising performances at the back end of last season, and will no doubt be utilised again next campaign.

Martin Kelly (CB) – Played more as a right back than at centre half, but many believe that Kelly will end up in the middle of the defence. Probably one of the most exciting prospects on the list.

Andre Wisdom (CB) – Captains England U19s, the centre back can also play at right back or central midfield. Plays with a maturity beyond his years.

Jack Robinson (LB) – An exciting, pacey full back who impressed during his second appearance for the club against Arsenal, marking Theo Walcott.

Jordan Henderson (RM) – A lot of expectation on his shoulders after his big money move, but at 20 years of age, he should be given time to prove himself.

Conor Coady (CM) – Captain of the England U17 side which won the European Championships last summer, a solid performer with a good passing range and tackling ability.

Jonjo Shelvey (CM) – His style reminds many of a young Steven Gerrard, and has already demonstrated his excellent passing ability from central midfield in the first team. A firm favourite of King Kenny.

Raheem Sterling (LM) – As close to a wonderkid as the Reds are going to get, caution must be used when making too many sweeping statements about his great talent. He is lightning quick and has an excellent shot on him, he will surely become a first team regular with these attributes.

Andy Carroll (ST) – A typical English centre forward. A lethal left foot and the best header of the ball in the country. Let’s see how the Reds utilise his talents next season.

Connor Wickham (ST)? – The Ipswich striker is said to be holding out for a move to Anfield but the Tractor Boys are said to be holding out for £12million. If we do get him though, many believe he has the talent to be the next Alan Shearer.

There’s not too much to get excited about there.

You obviously never saw Gerrard when he was young.

  • martin says:

Great to see so much young talent coming through, but the fact they are english means very little to liverpool fans, after all we are scouse not english!!

  • hero says:

I would rather see Adam Morgan or even Michael N’goo to Connor Wickham. N’goo is tall but he has many different skills as compared to Wickham who is too similar to Carroll

  • calel says:

not bad but, flanagan will eventually be called upon to be better at passing, running with the ball. He as 0 attacking instincts, robinson does. Kelly and wisdom true enough, ayala is there so its not like Wisdom or kelly will be first choice automatically. Dont know anything about belfor. Shelvey has good passing but needs alot more. Sterling is better on the right. Morgan, Ngoo should looked at. Carroll hasnt even performed yet.

    • Mick says:

You’re wrong about Sterling. He plays best on the left, where he’s so effective at cutting back or across onto his right foot and whipping in a cross or going for goal. He’s also able to go on the outside too. That’s how he plays for our U18’s and England U17’s.

I don’t agree with the bit about Flanagan having zero attacking instinct. He’s not naturally attacking in his play but his close control and passing is of a good level, there’s been plenty of moments he’s displayed that for the first team. Against City he played some lovely cross-field passes. He’s shown he can use sharp turns to get away from his man in tight situations and even showed a bit more adventure against Villa to make runs into the box. He is 18 you have to remember and his game will develop as he matures. His crossing does need improvement though, that’s one thing i would pick out from watching him in the reserves and the first team.

Re the article itself, should’ve included Adam Morgan before Wickham, seeing as the Ipswich man may well not even join us. Morgan was our top scorer for the U18’s and has carried it through to the Reserves in the few games he did play, while he’s also capped at England U17 level.

As a Liverpool fan this actually depresses me.. bcuz I know that the foreign talent that the other teams will buy will always be better that the mediocre crap that is produced by England. I say go after the foreign talent when they are young so they can be called “home grown” then we won’t have to waste our money on the Brit talent that rarely shows its quality.

    • JobiWaan says:

Dear lord! The thing with liverpool is that we have foreign coaches who are producing our far from “mediocre” english talant these days. The players never have been the problem. It’s the way that they are coached.

  • hannah says:

    starting team for the future

    Belford
    Flanagan Kelly Wisdom(vc) Robinson
    Henderson Coady(c) Suso
    Sterling Morgan Wickham

    Some quality players
my one to watch is wisdom because we know about sterling and suso but wisdom is pure class

  • fowler9 says:

jesus give them a chance…some of the comments are ridiculous. The 3 defenders weve seen in 1st team (robinson, kelly and flanno) have done more than anyone couldve expected. Kelly looked as strong a right back as anyone in division. Jonjo plays like he’s far more experienced.
Just because they are english doesnt mean they need to be s**t, Dalglish and Clarke are getting these players from day 1 and they’ll learn the right things. They all already look comfortable in possession which is half the battle

  • Lee says:

I see Hannah left out Andy Carroll. Presumably another dumb wannabee Liverpool fan jumping on the bandwagon and considering him to be a failure….already.

He’ll score more than Suarez next season and he’s only 21.

    • hannah says:

i only left carroll out coz im on about 6-8 years time and i cant see carroll here then. Im one that thinks he is a good buy and 2 goals in 8 games is great considering he was slighlty injured. I would love him to be here in 6 years time i just cant see him being here, 2 in 8 games is certainly loads better than 1 in 18.

  • Steve Ash says:

We have alot of young players who could excell :-

Conor Coady – could one day be a new Stevie G

Andre Wisdom – is unbelievebly astute and reads the game v-well, will be a rock in years to come.

Brad Smith – The left back we need if only 3-4 years older.

Adam Morgan – Son of god, nough said.

Tyrell Belford – Still school age, with the leadership of Pepe Reina should become England No1 in future.

Connor Thomas – Looks a class CM player.

These are the young players u don’t hear about but along with Sterling, Ngoo, Matty Regan, Flanagan, Robinson, Suso, Henderson, Kelly, Shelvey and afew others I can’t remember the names of at mo’, with the direction of our academy, reserve Management & Technical teams we should have one hell of a group of playerscoming through in the next 2-5 years even if afew of them drop out. The future IS bright but it sure ain’t orange or blue!!!!!!

  • ash says:

    suso’s not english u plankpots

  • Lewis says:

We buy foreign players people complain, we have the best english talent…people complain…personally I think English clubs should have at least 50% English players, and everyone wonders why we haven’t won the world cup since 1966….this is a step forward for both club and country, I look forward to the day 11 LFC players line up for England.

  • WC says:

they would be great to have as back up to
    Reina
    Johnson Carragher/Dann Cahill Cissokho
    Mata Gerrard Lucas Payet
    Suarez Carroll

  • freddy says:

I think it has come to a point were we have too mcuh talent and face the fact that some of them might not make it, e.g. susu=o, we have some many first team midfielders and then we have henderson, shelvey, coady, and others that are english, another one, we’ve all forgot about mavinga, who many thought was to become the next abidal of the future and was a sure grade to make the first team, these days, no one knows were he is smh

    • Sib says:

Mavinga was at genk in belgium on loan for all of last season, where he appeared in their league title winning team.
He was there coz he upset woy by saying he wanted some 1st team games after being in the euro champ winning France u19 team!
Don’t think he is as good as jack robbo going forward, but could do a good job at left centre back in longer term.

  • hadi lfc fan says:

only LIVERPOOL can make good english team to beat the world and all premier league team aswel come on LFC LOVE LFC

  • Red says:

First off, the homegrown rule is already in effect.

Second, I cannot believe you have omitted Suso from this line-up. In case you’ve forgotten, this is a Liverpool team, not an England team. Suso is the best Liverpool player outside of the first team, bar none.

    • Shaun says:

Red…I’m a regular at the Reserves as me and my mates never miss a home match for the lads, however, don’t get crossed up if you don’t watch every game! Suso is fantastic, but does not have the guile and killer instinct like Sterling, or even Pacheco (Who is unfairly treated at ‘Pool). Players in order of talent in the reserves and lower: 1. Pacheco 2. Sterling 3. Morgan 4. Suso 5. Wisdom 6. Coady 7. B.Smith 8. Ngoo 9. Robinson 10. Flanagan 11. Belford
Jonjo, Hendo, Carroll are with the 1st team and are already integrated in the set up (Jonjo WILL go on loan along with Pacheco, Wisdom, Robinson, Bouzanis and a few others)

  • mamun says:

I think you are forgetting two big players Adam Morgan who scored in the england u17 game against canada, i mean if wickham was good enough to make his debut for ipswhich i think morgan is more than ready, he is a poacher, a robbie fowler if u like he knows when to be at the right time and has a beast of a left peg!!!! And i know he isnt english but, SUSO his passing abitlity and technicial brillirance reminds me of david silva and maybe even fabregas!

  • Rabea_LFC says:

What about Adam Morgan? He’s going to be a wonderful striker

  • Richard says:

Why has everyone suddenly forgotten Dani Pacheco?

  • Terror says:

We’ll do well if TWO of these players will become top first team player. Calm down.
