Assessing the Strengths and Weaknesses of Charlie Adam

What a difference a day can make. There was absolutely no news on the transfer front this time yesterday but now Liverpool have confirmed they have agreed a deal for Charlie Adam, apparently have had a £15million rejected for Stewart Downing and tied up Glen Johnson to a new long term deal.

On Charlie Adam specifically, the move for the Scot has always slightly confused me considering the plethora of central midfield talent already at the club. With Jordan Henderson already at the club, along with the likes of Alberto Aquilani, Raul Meireles, Steven Gerrard, Lucas and Jay Spearing, it suggests to me that one or perhaps both of Aquilani and Meireles will be departing this summer.

Considering the talent that both Aquilani and Meireles do possess, it means Charlie Adam has a lot to live up to. King Kenny obviously sees something in the player and that is more than enough for me to trust that this should be a good move for us, but Adam will be going into a completely different environment to the one he has been used to as captain at Blackpool.

Of what I have seen of Charlie Adam this season, the overriding impression I have got that he possesses an excellent passing range. It has led some to suggest that he could be a like-or-like replacement for Xabi Alonso. From my point of view, Adam is a totally different player to the Basque and has more traits similar to either Meireles or Aquilani.

Although he can play in the holding midfield role, Charlie prefers to take up a lot more attacking positions and loves to be in the final third of the pitch to pick out a pass. Saying that though, it must be said that Adam loves the long raking diagonal ball, and can pick out players expertly to set up attacks for his side.

For the last few years we’ve bemoaned our squad’s lack of strength in depth. Kenny is addressing this issue.

I’ll withhold my own judgement until the close of the transfer window. Who knows who else might be arriving/departing until then?

Gud 4 liver king ds is a better sign.

  • nigel says:

talksport think he wants £100k a week!

    • Jay Wright says:

most of the journos only know just about as much as the rest of us. My guess would be that Adam would get a maximum of £60k per week, and more likely £50k – and would be very happy to receive that along with the opportunity to prove his talent on the big stage

are we really going to set the prem league pace with likes of henderson, adam and poss downing!?
    doubt it!

  • Kopstar says:

Good signing still which we had signed jones he would of been great buy let’s go and get mata

  • john says:

I do not understand this signature, we need a defensive midfielder because lucas has no replacement. I thought it would buy Matuidi or M’Vila, charlie adam is beyond what we already have.

      or

      ……….carra agger………
      johnson……………..new LB
      ………adam..lucas……….
      ….gerrard.meireles.suarez/h,son
      ………kuyt/suarez……….

stop moaning the lot of you, we have lacked quality on the bench for years, adam isnt coming to play every game but he adds great strenght in depth, first we dont have enough now we have too many

with all these players it gives us many different options for formations and tactics, its brilliant

      • WC says:

        I would go with
        ————-Reina———–

        Johnson-Carragher-Dann-Baines

        ————-Lucas———–
        ——-Gerrard—-Adam——-

        —–Suarez———Mata—–
        ————Carroll———-

I would love to see Baines sign but I can’t see it happening and if not I would love to see Cissokho at LB. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mata signs and we should be favourites to sign Dann. Doni as back up keeper and a good striker as back up to Carroll.

    • Michae Musuk says:

so Carroll does not play? Which team are we playing against?

  • Michae Musuk says:

A lot of us do not understand but criticise anyway. Is this not the reason why we do not manage Liverpool Football Club? Does anyone know which formation or what injuries we are going to have? Didn’t we all bemoan not having quality in depth not so long ago? Do we know which players are coming in or going? I suggest we wait until we at least know a little bit.
