Did we do justice to the £47million spent this summer?

|

The Scottish international may find it hard to cement a starting place in the Liverpool squad as the team is stacked with players and will have to fight for a place with Meireles, Lucas, Henderson, Aquilani(depending on the outcome of his transfer saga) and Spearing as the other centre midfield spot is all but Gerrards barring injury.

Stewart Downing joined Liverpool for a fee of 20m pounds from Aston Villa. His price tag raised a few eyebrows which I just cannot understand  why. He was Aston Villa’s player of the season and was their most  consistent player over the past years. How about this for a fact – since August 2004 only Fabregas, Gerrard and Lampard have created more chances in the EPL than Downing. The only reason the English international is so underrated is because he does not play for one of the top 6 clubs. His ability to deliver pin point crosses into the box will no doubt excite Big Andy who will be looking to forge a lethal combination with Downing.

Liverpool have been crying out for an out and out winger since the days of Steve McManaman and Downing fits perfectly into that profile. At 27, Downing is at the peak of his career and as a Premiership veteran will have no problems adjusting to his new team.

So who did we get for 47 million? Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year, Blackpool’s captain and Player of the Year and Aston Villa’s Player of the Year. Even better was that they all wanted a move to Anfield. Still doubt our transfer policy?
