It was confirmed today that Glen Johnson has signed a contract extension to stay at Liverpool. Reds Director of Football Damien Comolli told the Liverpoolfc.tv website:
“We are absolutely delighted. We were in talks for a few weeks, but it was easy to find an agreement because he wanted to stay and we wanted him to stay. We are very pleased he wants to commit long term, and I think he was pleased we went to him and asked him to commit long term. His best years are to come. Very often defenders peak between 26 and 31, so he is just entering into those years where a maturity comes in and his knowledge of the game gets better and better. We are happy his long-term future is at Liverpool.”
Certainly Johnson’s best years are still ahead of him. As with Jordan Henderson the Reds paid a premium for an Englishman when they signed the player from Portsmouth in 2009, and although there have been a couple of spells of poor form from the 26 year old since his arrival, Johnson has delighted the Anfield faithful with his ambition in the attacking third of the pitch.
He is an absolute menace in the opposition half and is a nightmare to defend against when he has the ball at his feet, especially one on one with an opposition full back. His ability to dribble around defenders and provide openings for midfielders and attackers alike is essential in the modern game, and he is a perfect example of an attacking full back.
Offensive play, however, has never been the problem with Glen. His defensive attributes are the ones that have always been questioned. From my perspective, I don’t mind taking the rough with the smooth where Glen is concerned for as long as his defensive errors are restricted to a minimum, he more than makes up for it with his forays into the attacking third.
