Why I’m expecting a big season from this £20m man

|

The winger has forced his way back into regular England contention due to a fantastic season with Aston Villa where he was voted their player of the year. He has now joined Liverpool at a time when they are on their way back up after some recent dark times for the club and his traditional wing style compliments what is an impressive array of midfield talent. The former Boro man may not be the best winger in the league but what he will bring is consistent performances while his partnership with Jose Enrique down the left looks like it has the potential to be deadly.

I fully expected Downing to make a good start to his life on Merseyside, and while he isn’t exactly the Juan Mata signing a lot of Reds fans would have hoped for, he is actually a perfect fit for Kenny Dalglish’s new Liverpool machine. The England winger has the right attitude to be at Liverpool and to the surprise of some, has a lot more flair and skill on the ball than a lot of people expected.

It is still early days of course but there is no doubt that Stewart Downing is having a positive impact on the left side of Liverpool’s midfield and I believe that in time he will justify his hefty price tag and prove himself to be a top class winger. One of the main positives about Downing’s encouraging start is that after years of searching, Liverpool finally seem to have a left winger capable of making that position his own, and the best part is, I expect him to become even better over the coming months.
