Even if it doesn’t have the same glamour as the FA Cup, lower league sides still have the same desire for big scalp, to both strengthen their financial situation from playing such ties, as well as using the cup as a distraction from their league form.
Even though Exeter had lost all three league matches at the start of this season, Liverpool coming to St James Park will probably be the biggest moment of their season both on and off the field. King Kenny was aware of this and made sure there was no mistake in the result.
Like in the early 80s, the Reds will show this competition a great deal of respect this season, and I would put money on us being in the final when February comes around.
