Bringing in our new boy could be the right way to go v Spurs

|

It’s only in Champions League weeks that you really begin to feel the pain of having no competitive football while the other tops sides are travelling to far away destinations looking to pick up crucial points to progress.  I don’t for a second miss the Europa League, don’t get me wrong – even if I do change my tune when we’re in the final 8 of that competition – but what I wouldn’t give for some Champions League football throughout this season.

Which is why I am really looking forward to Sunday’s game against Tottenham.  It’s our first of what you can only describe as ‘Super Sunday’ games of the season and while we may have bigger contests waiting for us down the line, this is our first ‘big’ game; a match against one of our competitors for the Champions League place that we have found so elusive over the past couple of years.

Apart from the importance of a game like this, I am also looking forward to what should – at least in parts – be a pretty open game.  After the disappointment of the game last week, when we created enough chances to have won the game three times over, we should be looking to this game to make amends.  And make no mistake: Tottenham are very beatable, you just have to approach them the right way and I’m sure Kenny and his coaching team have used the absence of midweek games to work hard on how to approach this match.

Personally though, I think that there should be a couple of changes for this game, more so in terms of personnel than how we approach the match tactically because in that sense I can’t fault the team for the way they’ve performed for the most part since the new season began.  But I think that we could really benefit from a few changes on Sunday.  Firstly, to follow up on my article from last weekend, I think that leaving Carragher out for this game would be the right way to go, bringing our new boy Sebastien Coates in in his stead.
