Let’s Use This Press Negativity To Create a Siege Mentality

|

Another funny aspect of the press bias against the club is that Raul Meireles went from being a very good, very classy midfielder at Liverpool to being the answer to all of Chelsea’s problems and a sign that we’re nothing but Chelsea’s feeder club. They go from building us up and wishing we were still there to challenge United and then, once it appears that we may actually be on our way back up there they can not wait to pull the club down from the inside out.

Similarly, many Liverpool fans may remember how during our successes under both Houllier and Benitez, there was always – always – a negative report of story in the Friday or Saturday morning papers before a big match at the weekend or a horribly misquoted interview from a member of the opposition before a ‘Super Sunday’ spectacular that were all for the purposes of getting inside our player’s heads and winding them up the wrong way before kick-off. These were all the more prevalent if we were looking like more a threat to Fleet Street’s favourite club and things don’t appear to have changed 10 years on.

What reasons the media has for this I really don’t know because it will only sell so many papers and earn so many viewers when you pair untrue headlines with very pedestrian stories. So you do actually begin to wonder whether there is a deeper reason for all of this or whether it really, genuinely is just to shift a few more papers. Either way, I’m glad to see Kenny and the players giving this negative attention the disdain it deserves and if it continues over the course of the season I’d be glad to see it put to good effect because if you look at clubs like Chelsea (under Mourinho) and United for the past 20-odd years, they have used negativity and what can only be described as hatred to good effect and turned it into a positive by creating a trophy-swallowing siege-mentality that bred success after success. I just hope that Kenny let’s the players see the nonsense being written about them and their club; makes it clear to them how ridiculous it is and why it’s being done and makes certain that they use it to fuel their winning mentality.

I guess the press are use to Liverpool being source of trouble and discontent so they can not live with new peaceful and positive atmosphere about the club.
They didn’t mind Carroll at Newcastle.

They need something bad to right about LFC.

The press will never forgive us for destroying the Sun on Merseyside because they know if they step out of line it could be them. And as 75% of the media is owned by News Corp they are the biggest culprits for the trouble making that goes on, the rest just cut and paste. I wish we could take a stand against Sky but it would never happen.
