Possession really will be nine tenths of the law tomorrow

|

Last season Kenny Dalglish prided himself on picking a formation to suit both the team and the opposition he was playing against. The 3-5-2 formation in the 1-0 win over Chelsea was a fantastic example of this adaptability.

The less variation of formation this season could be attributed to the fact that Kenny has more confidence in the players at his disposal. Last campaign, he was looking at how the opposition were lining up and then preparing tactics to prevent them from being an effective attacking force against them. Although I don’t doubt there are still extensive pre-match plans to prevent the opposition playing the way they want, the focus this season from Kenny is that he feels he needs a settled side, with a familiar formation, to ensure all the new players gel together. He also believes this is a stronger squad than last season and that they are more than capable of matching any opponent they come across.

This theory was undone against Tottenham, and at times against Wolves last weekend where we looked just as shaky. We didn’t dominate the ball in either game (against Wolves at home, they had the majority of possession of 51%) and if the same happens against Everton tomorrow, unless we get lucky, we will not be on the winning side.
