Perfect Timing for his return to the starting line up

|

Liverpool take on Manchester United on Saturday in one of the biggest fixtures in English football. A win for Kenny Dalglish’s side could move them to within three points of their arch rivals, as they look to inflict their opponents’ first defeat of the season.

In March, a hat-trick from Dirk Kuyt and a virtuoso performance from Luis Suarez gave Liverpool a comfortable 3-1 win. While it is likely to be a much tougher task this time round, the Anfield faithful could be in for a huge boost with the return of Steven Gerrard to the starting line-up.

According to reports, Gerrard is in line to make his first start since the aforementioned fixture over seven months ago for the visit of Sir Alex Ferguson’s men. He has been kept out by a groin problem, and has only made three substitute appearances during this campaign.

However, Dalglish, who has frequently stressed the importance of easing his skipper back in gently, seems to be ready to throw him back in at the deep end. Given the Liverpool boss’ recent comments, it would seem that Gerrard is now back, or very close to, full fitness, and his return will boost the Reds in more ways than one.

Last season, when Liverpool eased to that 3-1 win, they were the stronger side all over the pitch. Suarez terrorised the visitors’ defence, while in midfield the Reds were a different class. It is unlikely that Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson will be able to have the same impact this time around. Both are still settling in at Anfield, and a centre midfield pairing of Gerrard and Lucas Leiva would inspire much more confidence.

Despite his injury troubles last season, Gerrard still showed his ability to make a difference in the big games, scoring twice at Old Trafford and providing the cross for Raul Meireles’ winning goal away to Chelsea.

Gerrard’s inclusion will galvanise both the Liverpool players and fans, and he will eager to impress after so long out. He will provide a solid, dependable presence in midfield, and as ever will be a goal threat. He has a history of big performances in the big games, and it would be typical of him to be the difference on his return.

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.
