We will look back at that match as two points dropped

|

Victory would have seen the Reds move to within three points of their arch rivals, but they were knocked back when United’s third substitute, Javier Hernandez, escaped his marker to head in the equaliser from a corner at close range. It was a huge kick in the teeth, with the visitors having shown very little attacking threat up until that point.

Still, though, Liverpool had chances to win. First Dirk Kuyt was denied by De Gea, then Jordan Henderson twice went close, before Martin Skrtel blasted the final chance well over in the dying seconds. There was no doubt that Liverpool had the better opportunities, and looked by far the more likely to take the win in the closing stages.

After the game, Lucas Leiva said that Liverpool deserved to win the game, and I fully agree with him. They showed far more attacking intent than their opponents, and were it not for some fine goalkeeping from De Gea, we would surely all now be revelling in a fine victory.

Yes, Manchester United had been flying in recent weeks. But Liverpool sent out a message on Saturday that they can still take the game to the top sides in the country. There were a lot of positives to take from the game, but most fans will be disappointed that the players were not able to secure the win they deserved.

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

  • In some circumtances we can say Liverpool have the better opportunities the fact was of the players were not so well placed to score so have to consolidate with a draw that’s must be taken in great consideration to avoid the gap YNWA
