Is Cruyff correct in his opinion over Messi?

|

Cruyff argues that to win the Ballon d’Or, you do not have to be the so called ‘best’ yet exactly what is the best? Yes Messi and Ronaldo stars in the conventional sense, but so are the midfield duo at Barcelona but in a different way. Even so they still create moments of magic and can turn any game on its head as quickly as anyone with the ball at their feet.

Just as I questioned exactly what makes a top player, the exact same can be asked about what makes the best player. Is it the conventional star of the team or someone that you simply cannot play without? Understated all too often means underrated in the modern game, and it is unimaginable for a player such as Makelele or Sergio Busquets to be a serious contender for the Ballon D’or yet how vital have they been throughout their careers?

Cruyff makes a valid, although slightly biased point, yet in reality the way awards are done will never change, and it is only natural to want to reward and hail those star players who are the most creative and attacking in the world, and any smart person would back Messi for the win this time round. Next season I have a feeling there may be a different player holding the trophy with the balance of power shifting in Spain as we speak.

Please shut up. I’ve been a Barcelona and Liverpool supporter for the last 20 years and you’re embarrassing both clubs with your ‘original’ opinions here.

Messi helped his side win the double, equalling Ronaldo’s goalscoring achievements at the same time. He also did the latter without overlooking his teammates and making a thorough contribution for the good of Barcelona. When it became evident that Real were going to win nothing, Ronaldo’s teammates became preoccupied with making him the Pichichi, passing up the opportunity to score themselves in favour of attempting to put it on a plate for Ronaldo. Very unprofessional, disrespectful to the opposition, and a bit of a joke overall. Messi, conversely, started playing a deeper role towards the very end of the La Liga season, highlighting that personal glory wasn’t necessarily as important for him.

And then you swing out this ‘Iniesta’ bollocks as if you’re implying that you have a cerebral knowledge of the game that deserves some credit. Jesus Christ. Patronising shite.

As great as Xavi, Iniesta and Ronaldo are, if Messi is passed up for the Balon D’Or after the season he’s just had, then the people who make these decisions are evidently as boringly sentimental as yourself mate.
