Liverpool’s League Cup victory last Sunday came at a price as Daniel Agger suffered a fractured rib, ruling him out for ‘a few weeks’ according to boss Kenny Dalglish, speaking at Melwood earlier today.

Agger’s latest problem adds to his long list of injury woes since signing for the club from Brondby back in 2006. Last season the Danish international featured in just 16 Premier League matches, due to back, calf and knee issues.

This season has saw Agger enjoy an extended run in the side, forming a formidable partnership with Martin Skrtel at centre-back, who have helped Liverpool become the second meanest defence in the Premier League, behind leaders Manchester City. The Reds have conceded just 23 goals in 25 matches.

Dalglish stated: ‘Anybody that is injured is a miss. Daniel has been playing fantastically well this year,’ before adding: ‘the squad is there to cover eventualities, injuries and suspensions and we’ll need to cover for Daniel if he’s going to be out for a few weeks.’

Steven Gerrard’s prognosis was much less clear, having walked off after barely 30 minutes during England’s recent friendly versus Holland on Wednesday.

Some questioned the logic of using the Liverpool skipper, called-up by stand-in boss Stuart Pearce, having played an energy-sapping 120 minutes at Wembley just 3 days earlier. However Dalglish was quick to support England’s caretaker manager:

I have fantastic respect for ‘Pearcey. He is a really straight, honest guy so I don’t think he would do anything harmful to the football club.

Many Liverpool fans will disagree, as another meaningless international ends with a key player returning with an injury, just days prior to a vital club clash. Liverpool face Arsenal on Saturday in a battle to finish in the top 4 and may have to do so without their influential captain.

When asked if Gerrard would be fit for the clash, Dalglish answered: ‘If I don’t know what it is, I can’t tell you whether there is every chance or no chance [of Gerrard facing Arsenal], so rather than speculate it’s best for us to just wait and see what the medical people have to say once they’ve seen him.’

Jimmy Areabi (Editor) - @fantasista1077: Huyton raised like Steven Gerrard, football has been my passion since the time I received a Kenny Dalglish badge as a toddler, and I've followed the Reds ever since – something that was easier during the 80s, when I worshipped John Barnes! I've produced work for many football media outlets & am now happy to run a major site on the club I love - providing our fans with a voice, and to bring as much information and news on the club as possible.
Having played football all my life, I aim to continue longer than Stanley Matthews...

I not too sure who we will miss most, although Stevies defensive midfield role has been a success,it can be replicated by a couple of players Spearing or Adam to degrees. Agger however has been awesome along side Skrtel.

Once RVP gets a swift kicking he’ll no doubt break-down and the one-man Arsenal show will end.

Just heard that stevie g will miss the game against the gooners! That’s another injury for him while away with england! ( Remember jamie redknapp was injured for england on numerous occasions) and they have the cheek to give the captains arm band to parker! When he was vice captain! He needs to re-think his desire to play for england!

  • HERBIE says:

The injuries will force kk into a 4-2-3-1 formation with the team being
    1.Reina
    2.Johnson/Kelly
    3.Skrtel
    4.Carragher
    5.Enrique
    6.Spearing
    7.Adam
    8.Kuyt
    9.Henderson
    10.Downing
    11.Suarez

So I reckon it will be a tight game which will be 2-1 to the Redmen! With bellamy coming of the bench to score the winner! Y..N..W..A
