Liverpool chase Barca prodigies, plus Cole out (again)?

OUR attack has rightly come under intense scrutiny this season with the poor goalscoring return indicative of our less than satisfactory Premier League position.

It is therefore of little wonder then, that the press will link us with a whole host of offensive talent (and I’m not talking Joey Barton here!) for the foreseeable future. Some may be wild and outlandish speculation; others may have a little more to them – we’ll leave you to decide which is which!

Still, with a lack of recent excitement on the pitch, you can’t help but look for some excitement off it, starting with a current, and a former Barcelona prodigy.

First up is the latest in a long line of attacking talent to graduate from Barcelona’s famous youth academy, La Masia; winger Cristian Tello. The 20-year Spaniard old has burst onto the scene this season and Liverpool were mentioned as strongest suitors, even before announcing himself to a wider European audience with two goals in the Champions League match versus Bayer Laverkusen.

His impact for the European Champions has been such that Pep Guardiola is now desperate for the tricky winger to sign a new contract as he faces losing him in the summer if his release clause is met. Those doubting the youngster would even consider leaving what is widely regarded as the best team in the world should consider the fact that he already has; when he swapped Barca for fierce neighbours Espanyol in 2008. However things didn’t work out despite being promised first team action, and Tello decided to rejoin his boyhood club in 2010.

Of course, a transfer of this calibre would have no shortage of suitors but the link to Liverpool went into overdrive last week when Spanish football journalist and Sky’s Revista de le Liga pundit Guillem Balague admitted the Reds interest on his Twitter feed:

‘Tello monitored by Liverpool. Would cost 10m euros but FCB favourites to renew his contract.’

Although Tello’s agent, Jose Maria Orobtig, was as you’d expect, leaving all avenues open: “There have been calls from England, Portugal, from everywhere, but still nothing is clear.”

Less clear is the apparent speculation linking Liverpool to the original Barcelona youth prodigy, Bojan Krcic, who is now at Serie A side Roma.

The Reds are said to be monitoring the situation in the Eternal City, where Bojan is unhappy (once more) at failing to hold down a regular first team place since joining at the start of the season. Liverpool were strongly linked with Bojan during Rafa Benitez’s tenure at the club and now Damien Comolli is said to have had the 21-year old attacker scouted ahead of a possible summer bid.

A deal would be complex however as Barcelona still hold certain rights to his signature if the Italian club fail to fulfil a series of contractual obligations regarding a time-driven transfer fee.

Finally The Daily Mail (I know, I know) are reporting that newly-flush French giants PSG have turned their attentions to long-forgotten playmaker Joe Cole, who is on-loan at Lille.

New manager Carlo Ancelotti is said to have been impressed with Cole’s form in France and therefore be preparing a bid of around £5 million to tempt Liverpool, where Cole still has 2-years left to run on a contract worth around £100,000 per week.

Lille would like to keep the attacking midfielder but would not be able to match his wages and the Reds are loathe to subsidise another loan deal.

With the PSG playmaking role already filled in the shape of Javier Pastore, and Liverpool’s new attacking midfield recruits failing to live up to expectations, would Kenny Dalglish not do well to have the diminutive number 10 return to Anfield next season?

Why would Liverpool buy strikers in Summer? We have been told that they don’t need them by KD as his protégées are doing fine. He stubbornly stands by this just as he did during the January window when the need was still evidently there to others. He reaps what he has sown it would seem. Fenway Sports are hardly business-like by not intervening when needed and they doindeed intervene before anyone says the manager has the say ( the Suarez affair for example).
KD has shot himself in the foot and is unlikely to be in the same role next season. Knowing him to be grumpy he is not likely to stand back in a lesser role but will walk away.
