AFTER sacking Kenny Dalglish only yesterday, Liverpool Football Club have been granted permission to talk to Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez regarding taking up the vacant hotseat at Anfield.

Wigan’s Chairman Dave Whelan confirmed the approach whilst admitting he wouldn’t stand in the Spaniard’s way if he wanted to become Dalglish’s successor:

“I gave him permission and he will be talking to them soon – I don’t know when, but quite soon. I don’t know the exact timescales of when he is due to meet with the Liverpool owners but I will never stand in Roberto’s way.”

Whelan, who almost lost his Manager to Aston Villa last season continued:

“When Liverpool sacked Kenny I have to say I thought Liverpool would be knocking on the door and sure enough they are. I did promise Roberto and I have always said when a big club comes he would have permission to talk to them and they don’t come any bigger than Liverpool.”

The Latics Chairman added:

“When they phoned me I was actually with Roberto having a meeting on what we are doing next season!”

38 year old Martinez is seen as one of the Bright Young Things in football management, and after securing Wigan’s status as a Premier League team yet again, he has seen his stock continue to rise since getting Swansea promoted into the Championship back in 2009.

This season, his Wigan pulled off a Houdini-style escape from relegation, with victories against Liverpool at Anfield, as well as beating Arsenal and Manchester United in the final nine games, from which they accumulated 21 points out of a possible 27.

does anyone know who else is on the shortlist. martinez is obviously one, who are the others? it would seem fairly certain that avb may be another, can anyone clarify

Editor: AVB, as well as Rodgers, Benitez, Klopp and…Deschamps muted again.

Jesus. I have a real bad feeling about the next appointment and we don’t even know who it is yet!

have just read that avb is on his way to roma. martinez had been close to the villa job and while he intends to meet fsg he feels pressure might be too much. capello is holding out for chelski, pep while approached seems unlikely to come out of his sabbatical. rafa not on shortlist for whatever reason, klopp happy with c l with dortmund and deschamps also not on shortlist due to poor marselle form, which leaves rodgers by default. does he have any links or passion for us i wonder.

They shuld just bring rafa back even in his worst season we didn’t per4m lyk ths.

  • Chan says:

It’s a bad bad idea. We need someone who is successfull at winning trophies not battling relegation.

It’s so bad it ranks up there with the appointment of KD.

  • Red4Life says:

If FSG are reading this then take note – BIG Mistake if we appoint Roberto martinez.

It will be a throw back to the Hodson days. Fair enough RM has had some good results but for last 3 seasons his teams have been in the bottom half. if he was THAT good then why were’nt Wigan fighting for the Cup comps or league ?????

Also he wont attract decent players from Europe to move us forward – we be left with the second / third rate signings and mid-table obsecurity !!!

    We should be worried !!

    Bring in AVB or RAFA
