Liverpool FC’s hopes of signing either Cristian Tello or Ibrahim Afellay from Spanish giants Barcelona have been dealt a big blow by the club’s new manager.

Both winger’s were seen as viable targets this summer as the Reds look to strengthen both wide and attacking areas of the current squad, especially after the sale of Dirk Kuyt and the seemingly imminent departure of Maxi.

Liverpool had been watching both players for a while, with a move to Anfield deemed a serious possibility for Tello, in particular.

It was revealed back in March that the young starlet had been monitored by the Reds, as he hesitated over signing a new contract – something widely publicised by Spanish journalist Guillem Balague over Twitter.

However new FC Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has told the pair he wishes them to stay at Camp Nou, as the club prepares for life after Pep Guardiola.

Vilanova has reportedly told Tello, who only broke into the first team last season, that he wishes to build the next generation of Barcelona stars around him (and other La Masia graduate Issac Cuenca), whilst FourFourTwo Dutch football journalist Mohamed Moallim recently tweeted:

‘Good news for Afellay: Tito Vilanova wants him to stay part of his plans. Agent Rob Jansen has stopped looking for a new club for him’.

With that, any slim chance the Reds had of signing either player this summer now seems to be at an end.

Jimmy Areabi (Editor) - @fantasista1077: Huyton raised like Steven Gerrard, football has been my passion since the time I received a Kenny Dalglish badge as a toddler, and I've followed the Reds ever since – something that was easier during the 80s, when I worshipped John Barnes! I've produced work for many football media outlets & am now happy to run a major site on the club I love - providing our fans with a voice, and to bring as much information and news on the club as possible.
Having played football all my life, I aim to continue longer than Stanley Matthews...

What a stupid bit of so called news. Liverpool have a new manager who has his own ideas, and isn’t shackled to a director of football unlike Kenny was. So if there ever was any truth at all about Liverpool’s interest in these players it has been consigned to history.
