A HOST of British musicians are joining forces to release a Hillsborough charity single, with the aim of making the single this year’s Christmas number one.

Artists ranging from Robbie Williams to Gerry Marsden will donate their time to record a cover of The Hollies’ classic “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” – the song Everton used in their moving Hillsborough tribute earlier this year.

The single will be released on December 17 and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Hillsborough families’ legal costs in their ongoing fight for justice.

Other artists set to be involved include Paloma Faith, Mel C, Mick Jones (The Clash), Dave McCabe (The Zutons) and Jon McClure (Reverend & The Makers). A total of 17 people involved have been revealed so far, with more names set to be released ahead of the song’s release.

A press conference was held on Thursday evening to announce the project, with Steve Rotheram MP, Kenny Dalglish and Guy Chambers, who produced the song, breaking the news.

Speaking at the press conference, Dalglish said: “The families of the 96 should never have been in the position they are now in, of having to fight to get the accidental verdicts from the 1989 inquests overturned. I will continue to support their dignified campaign every step of the way.”
