Worth Waiting Until Summer For Their Signatures?

THERE seems to have been an alarming amount of overrated/mediocre players being linked with Liverpool of late, with the January transfer window just around the corner.

From Daniel Sturridge and Tom Ince, to Son Heung-Min and Georgios Samaras. All very worrying.

The only positive one I’ve heard so far is regarding Arsenal having their interest peeked by Stewart Downing, but surely that one is a joke?

Maybe we can arrange a swap deal for Theo Walcott and really help to push Arsene toward the exit?

All joking aside, I’ve not got a problem with either Sturridge or Ince, nor a lot of the other British players we’ve been linked to, other than the fact that I just don’t believe they’re any better than what we’ve already got. In Sturridge, we’d be acquiring a player who isn’t good enough for one of our rivals – where’s the good in that?

Whilst, with Ince, if we do actually end up stumping up the cash for him, whoever agreed to let him leave in the first place really should be having their employment re-assessed. But is he really good enough for Liverpool? Is he going to take us up a level, or contribute in the same, as he does a division below?

Likewise with the handful of foreigners we’ve been linked with – are they really equipped to add a significant punch to our squad that we’ve been lacking this season? I really doubt it. Samaras has had a go in the Premier League with the current champions some years ago and didn’t quite make it, whilst – as I wrote a few months ago – Heung-Min wouldn’t be adding a prolific touch in front of goal to the squad, so what would be the point?

Our problem, you see, is goals – we just don’t score enough. If there were a proven British player available for a reasonable fee and we knew we’d get a return, fine, I’d say go for it but as it stands none of the players we’ve been linked to on these shores has proven themselves in this division or, as in Sturridge’s case, proven themselves enough.

While, as all Premier League clubs have discovered in the past 10 years, buying cheap from abroad doesn’t necessarily indicate that you’re getting a bargain, very occasionally (as in the case of Michu) a player will slip in for buttons, under the radar of the big clubs – but it’s a small, small percentage which makes taking that chance not worth the hassle.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
That’s not to say we haven’t been linked with some impressive signings. Arda Turan, David Villa and Klaas Jan Huntelaar, to name a few. But the sticking point with these potential signings appears to be that they either don’t want to – or wouldn’t be available to – move until the summer.

So, given all the evidence, it raises the question: why not just hang on to whatever funds we have for reinforcing in January and invest more wisely in the summer? There’s no reason why we couldn’t look at a short-term loan to see us through. Perhaps even look at bringing in a Sturridge or a Bent, with a view to a permanent signing, should they perform.

But a knee-jerk signing out of panic over our lack of goals will only come back to haunt us, particularly one that drains the ‘war-chest’ (such as a £12-15 million move for Sturridge). Just look at the Andy Carroll situation – it hasn’t only been a constant embarrassment for the past 2 years that we spent so much, but the lack of return has led to FSG refusing to splash out such a huge amount again, so it’s had long-term repercussions too that, consequently, has led to our failure to bring in another big-money, proven striker – and now we can’t score goals.

More than anybody, I’d love to see a top-class striker brought in and have our problems end instantly. It isn’t going to happen, at least not in January. In all likelihood we’ll end up with Ince and Sturridge and, in 6 months times, when either or both have proven to be a waste of money, we’ll be back to square one.

So, in the meantime, I’d prefer a couple of intelligent loan signings and to look to the summer to properly end our striking issues with a player of real substance.

i wouldn’t give Rodgers ANY money . he cant be trusted with it . all i hear about is average players linked to liverpool . NO give the cash to a top manager who will sign top players

    • RoytheRed says:

FSG can’t afford a top manager,’cos he’ll want to build a team. So we have a cheap manager, who will toe the FSG line, Rodgers will go for Ince and Sturridge because that’s all he’ll probably get. So get used to mid table mediocrity.

      • erin says:

FSG might have made a mistake in appointing a manager, but they paid 6 million in compensation. Not exactly a cheap manager. A pretender, YES, but it took me months to figure out BR. He is the guy you interview and you think, the job is yours, but when it comes to doing it, takes you a while to realize you have messed up big time.

The guy that didnt get offered an interview, goes to a top 4 club in the meantime.

  • ken says:

tom ince contract run out and would not re sign not down to liverpool we tried to keep him

  • ken says:

gutted with the players linked with, why pay scouts if we only go for players rodgers has worked with no wonder were going back i like rodgers but without the right players hes not going to last much longer before the supporters turn on him.

    • bob says:

its a bit late for that , rodgers is taking us backwards , i and many many others have had enough

    • Shred says:

Buying sturridge would be a big mistake, not for bloody 12 million. He is not going to improve the team any bit. Seydou Doumbia anyone? he has had a brilliant scoring record and instead wasting 18 million on ince and sturridge we could rather go for him, atleast he is not a ball hogging showman like sturridge

  • Johnny Luken says:

    This article is so stupid.

    1. Sturridge and Ince ARE better than what we have as we have a weak frontline that needs to be reinforced.

    2. Theres no evidence we want Samaras, and I doubt you know enough about Houng Min to say what level of player he is.

    3. We’re not in a position to get the top drawer players, and even if we could whats the point in wasting money and wages on a quick fix like Villa whos 31 and just broke his leg?

    4. We cant get more than one loan deal this January as there is a limit of 2 a season! You cant even have the basic facts right!

    5. If we dont get anyone then we’ll struggle all season and finish even lower, meaning we’re less likely to get or even hold onto our best players.

    6. Getting decent young players like Ince & Sturridge does not mean we cant get anyone in the summer as we’ll have new funds available. Neither player is remotely comparable to the volume of money wasted on Carroll and Downing for they can bring to the team. If we buy 2 players, we can still get a player on loan on top of it. One does not stop the other from happening.

    7. We already tried Sturridge on loan got turned down. Its permanent or nothing.

    7. You say dont get average players, yet you want us to get Darren Bent?! The most limited player we’ve been linked with who isnt even good enough Aston Villa?

    Stupidity, stupidity everywhere…

Excellent comment and everthing I wanted to say, but I just didn’t know where to start exposing this piece as there was too many options. I’ll be looking forward to David’s reply! The amount of dopes around the place mouthing ‘loan deal only for Sturridge’ is a pure indication that they can’t accept reality, considering it’s been repeated over and over by Sturridge himself, Liverpool, Chelsea and the Media that whatever move he was going to take had to be permanent.

      • netraider says:

Excellent comment! There are certain idiots in the side who wants the manager changed every 6 months! BR has managed what has been the youngest side since Houllier and hasnt done so bad! If we had a lil bit of luck we wud be 5th right now. Ince and Sturridge add goals and pace for our weak front line. They are not really mediocre as the author says, they are considered one of the best talents in the country after Zaha and Wilshire.

        • Andy , durham says:

Hasnt done bad ? what planet you from ?
Wake up and smell reality you twit . Rodgers is a disaster and those two players ARE average

Its no wonder our standards have slipped with ‘fans’ like you

ps . Yes its another moron moaning about luck

        • Eoin says:

if the manager is bad , he should be changed – and he is very very very bad . i dont understand prople like you , why would back a guy who is clearly out of his depth ? are you even a liverpool fan ?

      • Shred says:

Sturridge is nothing but a ball hogging, attention seeking showman that just won’t fit the bill. A player who barely features for chelsea, even when they have only 1 proven striker, so why the hell are we after that reject

    • Raba says:

      Well said. PERIOD!

  • RoytheRed says:

Might get some cash for Suarez next month, can’t see him staying…would you?

  • Johnny Luken says:

All are you are to a man, completely retarded. There is not a single functional brain cell amongst you.

    Good day.

  • Denis says:

Not convinced with the players we have been linked with at all: Ince, Sturridge and Walcott are all english players. But they are not players of Gerrard and Suarez’s Calibre. For our club to get back challenging fro trophies year in and year out amongst the elite sides in europe within the champions league and to be competing for the top 4 poistions in premier league year in year out. The likes of Ince, Sturridge and Walcott are not the players for that.

B Rodgers needs to ship out : J Cole to QPR for £3-£5M, S Downing for £10-£12M to Arsenal, Sunderland Or Stoke and J Henderson for £8-£10M to Fulham, Reading, Norwich Or Southampton.

Then the owners need to back B Rodgers heavily with £75M to bring in Six/6 class quality attacking players of Gerrard and Suarez’s Calibre and Three/3 Defensive players.

    The six attacking players:
1: Willian Of Shakhtar Donesk RWF should be brought for £21-£25M (Marquee Signing)
2: Nolitto Of Benfica RW should be brought for £12-£15M to compete with Sterling and Assaidi.
3:I Munian Of A Bilbao AM should be brought for £14-£17M to compete with Shelvey and Suso.
4:B Arfa Of Newcastle LWF should be brought in swap deal with A Carroll and £10M
5: D Villa Of Barcelona FD should be brought for £8-£12M to compete with Borini and Suarez.
6: G Rossi Of Villareal FD should be brought for £6-£8M to compete with Borini and Suarez.

    Three Defensive players:

1: J Butland Of Birmingham GK should be brought for £5-£7M to compete with Jones and Reina.

2: M Diame Of West Ham Or B Matuidi Of PSG DM should be brought for £6-£12M to compete and Cover LUCAS

3: D Rose Of Tottenham LB should be brought for £3-£5M to compete and Cover Enrique.

These 9 players would bring more class quality and quality competition for places to club and would replace all the quality rodgers shipped out in the summer: As Allen, Assaidi, Borini and Sahin have not replaced the likes of Adams, Aquilani, Aurelio, Bellamy, Carroll, Kuyt, Rodriguez and Spearing in class, creativity, depth, quality and goals.

  • Obatare says:

U wil provide d cash i hope? Cos FSG wil not.

    • Denis says:

The owners spent £115M a season and a half ago, Yet our club brought in over £80M in player sales a season and a half ago( Babel, Bennayoun, Koncheskey, Poulsen, Meireles, Ngog and Torres. So there was a £35M over spent and we all know where that money was spent.

K Dalglish spent £82M on four average english players: Adams, Carroll, Downing and Henderson.

The £75M i have said the club need to bring in the 9 players, 6 class quality attacking players and 3 Defenders to club in January. Less than what we spent on the likes Of Adams, Carroll, Downing and Henderson.

But the players i have mentioned would cost £75M and in Arfa, Munian, Nolitto, Rossi, Villa and Willian, there will some much needed class, pace, speed, creativity and plenty of goals to the side and Squad.

      • Eoin says:

thats all well and good , but rodgers is not a good manager and he will probably buy more rubbish , like he did summertime

  • Andy , durham says:

Rodgers cant attract any decent players . What decent player would work for a 2nd rate manager who will be sacked within 12 months ?
Every transfer window Rodgers makes will make us weaker , just like Allen ,Assaidi and Borini

  • Jack The Lad says:

It’s funny how perception works. I never got this whole attitude thing with Sturridge. He never asked for a transfer even after being benched for so long, never said anything negative about the coaches or anything I remember. He always said when asked that he would like to play his natural position as a CF. Pool fans need to be realistic, it’s a good buy. He’s young and can play at least 4 positions, has an eye for goal, but since his name doesn’t sound Latin he can’t be good.

    • minty says:

i think your the type of idiot that if rodgers said he was signing bugs bunny , u would clap ur hands and say how clever rodgers is

      • Ozred says:

Another class reply. Intelligence all over it. There’s no issue whatsoever with bringing sturridge in u blonk. He’s shown that with opportunity he’s more than capable of being a very good premiership player.

This whole anti sturridge wank is getting very tired. He makes borini look like a cricket player. A totally different level of class.

  • steve O says:

Sturridge is a TOTAL W@NKSTAIN . And an average player , if this is what the once great LFC have sunk to , then id rather the dirty yanks pocketed the cash and we use our youth . I dont want to see a pr*ck like Sturridge wear the Liverpool red

  • Eoin says:

sturridge and ince are decent players …. but if we want to get back to top 4 we should be aiming for better players .

i agree that sturridge is not a nice character and i dont want him for that reason

  • minty says:

Rodgers MUST be stopped b4 he signs dross like that scumbucket sturridge

  • redrum says:

Daniel Sturridge impresses nobody so why bother at all . Tom Ince is a fine young player , but isnt one of our problems , that we are already bedding in young players ??

  • howie says:

Sturridge has no classs , and is an average player . Can we not do better ? Shame on Rodgers for bringing a greedy mercenary to our club
Another nail in Rodgers coffin if its true .Sturridge will get no welcome from me

  • redrum says:

Daniel Sturridge = El Hadgi Diouf mark ||

  • murt says:

    wheres my comment

  • bob says:

sturridge is not the sort of character i would like to see in a liverpool shirt
even if he was great ( which he is not ) i say no thanks

  • vinny says:

Why waste cash on rubbish like Sturridge ? He wont be liked and the next manager will have trouble recouping the cash back
