LIVERPOOL FC are said to be the preferred destination for Lazio defender Modibo Diakite, when his contract expires this coming summer, according to the player’s agent.

“Liverpool are our first choice,” said Ulisse Savini , the agent of the French-born defender, although only on a free transfer in June.

An on-going contract dispute between Diakite and the Roman club has meant the 25-year old centre-back has only made one appearance for il biancocelesti this season, in the Coppa Italia.

The dispute arose after the player refused to sign a new contract with Lazio, and is said to have turned down several other transfer opportunities.

Savini, his agent, has now gone on record to declare: “Liverpool are our first choice for June.

“It would be very difficult to say no to a club like that.”

It is worth noting that Diakite has also been linked with Serie A Champions Juventus in recent weeks, so such a public statement from an agent should come as little surprise, for those with suspicious minds. However, it could represent a shrewd piece of business should the Reds capture his signature at the end of the current season.

The 6ft 3″ defender of Senegalese decent has made 65 appearances for Lazio, and was part of the squad that won the Coppa Italia in 2009, beating AC Milan in the final.
