IN a piece of slightly more surprising transfer gossip in Sunday morning’s tabloids, most notably The Sunday Mirror, it is being reported that the Reds are joining the ‘hunt’ for Aston Villa’s one stand-out performer this season, Christian Benteke.
Following a relatively decent first season in the Premier League, the 22 year-old Belgian international has notched up 7 goals.
Despite Aston Villa being dumped out of the Capital One Cup he has also managed a further 4 in that competition.
It isn’t just Benteke’s prowess in front of goals that has caught the attention of a number of top sides in England however. The 8 assists in all competitions has also caught the eye, showing that he is much more than just a one-dimensional striker.
According to the press, Liverpool have now joined Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham (surprised?) in the pursuit of the young forward-man. The Sunday Mirror claims ‘Villa would find it hard to keep Benteke if the club is relegated to the Championship and face a fight to retain the 22-year-old even if they stay up.’
However, it really does remain to be seen whether Liverpool would want to pay upwards of £15 million for a player that doesn’t appear (at least not at first glance) to fit into the style of striker that we have come to know as being preferred by Brendan Rodgers, particularly not with Fabio Borini, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge all appearing to be perfectly suited to a front-3.
Given that the Belgian has already been at two clubs in the past 12 months, there is unlikely to be any moves for him before the January window closes in the next week but all named clubs will continue monitoring the youngster’s progress at the relegation-threatened Midlands club.
