LIVERPOOL have announced on their club website that they have agreed a deal in principle to sign striker Iago Aspas.
The Celta Vigo forward has agreed to join the Reds, and now the deal is just relying on legal documentation being completed.
Aspas scored 12 goals in 34 games in 2012-13 despite playing in a side threatened with relegation until the final day of the season.
The striker can play down the middle or out wide, suiting Brendan Rodgers’ style of having 2 wide attackers alongside a central forward. The signing of Aspas, which is expected to be finalised in the next few days, will threaten Stewart Downing’s place in the first team.
The former Middlesborough and Aston Villa winger was warned by Rodgers earlier in the season that was in danger of being sold, and after just 3 Premier League goals all season, Downing could be replaced by the Spaniard ahead of the new season.
Downing has completed his second season with the Reds, and is still struggling to win over many Kopites, who seem excited by the signing of Aspas.
The Celta Vigo forward was directly involved in 51 per cent of his team’s goals this season.
Aspas will be Brendan Rodgers’ second signing of the summer, after bringing Kolo Toure to Anfield on a free transfer.
