Liverpool must play hardball with Real Madrid

LFC Madrid Bernabeu31st of January 2011 one player by the name of Fernando Torres departs from Liverpool FC and joins Chelsea for a fee of £50million and Andy Carroll joins the Merseyside club from Newcastle United for a fee of £35million.

Carroll had only played 19 Premier League games and scored 11 goals in those games before he moved to Anfield and was seen as the perfect strike partner to Luis Suarez. The media went to the extent of comparing their partnership to that of John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley.

In all honesty the Geordie Giant was never was a £35million player and has never shown any promise of returning to the form that made Kenny Dalglish pay such a huge fee for a young English striker. Some might argue that Andy was never given time at Liverpool to showcase his abilities but, he is not what the club wanted.

The transfer fee paid for his services did not help him avoid scrutiny and his performances were constantly put under the microscope by the media and the fans. If media reports are to be believed the club has put Carroll’s value at £15million which represents a loss of £20million.

At the end of it all Liverpool has not benefited in any way from the sale of Torres

Liverpool made a big mistake by trying to replace a world class forward with an unproven young player and his transfer fee was largely set-off by the sum Liverpool received from the Torres transfer. The club once again finds itself in an almost similar position to the 2011 situation, whereby all signs are pointing towards the prospect of its main striker leaving the club.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are in pole position to secure the services of Luis Suarez, who has hinted at a potential exit. This time Brendan Rodgers, unlike his predecessor Kenny Dalglish (who had to find a replacement in a matter of hours), has the time to make sure that Liverpool does not repeat the same mistakes of 2011.

Luis Suarez is valued at around £40million which is less than what Fernando Torres was sold for. There are a number of reasons as to why Liverpool have to play hardball and get the best possible deal if Suarez is to leave.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
Real Madrid, the club Suarez says is hard to turn away if they come knocking, is known for paying huge transfer fees in order to get superstars. Gonzalo Higuain has said that he is leaving the Galacticos this summer, leaving Real with only one proven centre forward Karim Benzema. Barcelona beat Madrid to the signature of Neymar and Perez will want to retaliate and make a statement by signing one or two elite players. This gives Ian Ayre more ammunition when the time to negotiate Suarez’s exit comes (that’s if he is to leave)

Liverpool have two options, either they increase Suarez’s valuation or go for a player plus cash deal. Real Madrid has some players that Liverpool may need for one reason or the other. Liverpool is in need of reinforcements in defence; Raul Albiol is an experienced centre-back who has spent most of his time at Real on the bench. Angel di Maria is another player that may be welcome at the Kop should a player plus cash deal come into play; he brings pace, trickery and chips in with a few goals from time to time.

Ever since Xabi Alonso left Anfield no one has been able to fill his position and his return will be much appreciated by the Anfield faithful at the age of 31 he is still going strong and is one of the best in his position. These are proven players, any player plus cash deal gives Liverpool security as they will get a proven player and regardless of how they spend the money they get from the sale they would have benefited in some way.

Suarez is coming off a great season and is in better form than Torres was in when he was sold to Chelsea. Take away the baggage El Pistelero comes with and factor in the huge fees being paid by clubs in Europe his true value must around the £50million mark, pushing up his value will enable Rodgers to have enough funds to bid for high quality forwards.

Therefore Liverpool must stand their ground and not be held by Madrid at ransom

The ball is in Liverpool’s court and the club must make the best out of an unpleasant situation and at the same time make sure that they find a proper replacement and not make rush decisions.

  • Iain says:

The most important thing here is how much he is worth to liverpool, regardless of baggage.
Bad press is nothing, the fact is he is a better more complete player than Cavani and Napoli are going to get £50m plus do we should start at £50 to get a seat at the table and let PSG and Monaco get the fee up. Madrid can afford the fee or eff off.

    • dube says:

true that,Suarez is in the same class as the likes of Cavani and Falcao and these players are valued at over €50million,we must get an almost similar amount if not more

  • GENTLE-SOUL says:

Ian Ayre must learn how to play hard ball xpecially on this issue on ground(Suarez saga!)4rm Danny Levy of Spurs for christ sake!! Nobody can push or ride Levy any-how,by fire by thunder we must make something out of those glory-hunters pocket by all means make sure we invest it wisely on players like Coutinho,Benteke,Lukaku e.t.c YNWA!!

    • dube says:

Danny Levy does not allow clubs to bully him,he got the most out of Modric and in all honesty Bale is a great player but he is not worth the €60million that has been put on him.We need that aproach from Ayre

  • Weston says:

Ian Ayre is a total f**kwit and just a spineless yes man to the yanks. He is one of the reasons why we r in such a mess

  • Abdul says:

indeed suarez should be given the right value that fits him.
by pricing him only 40m means not appreciating his contribution enough yet no body in the Epl matches him

  • Bellaozi says:

Well…dnt hav much to say than only if higuain, can do da job of him(suarez) i tink they shuld do dat wit cash, at d same time, angel di maria nd alonso are also a prolific players that can be of gud help to the team, so i c no reason y B.R shuldnt take of dis playas wit 40m nd splash out suarez to madrid.

  • om says:

just shift 2 players for suarez..ozil and khedira.good bussiness

  • bj says:

Hope suarez stays n if doesn’t, then it’s nothing less than £50m for him.

  • Raam says:

Yes, a good suggestion from Dube. Bale is not better than Suarez but look at how much they value him. Ayre should let Madrid know that LFC is not under any pressure to sell Suarez as he just signed a long term contract. So his value can be very much higher than what Madrid offering.

  • bayo says:

Alonso + Di maria +£25 good business suarez can now leave or madrid can pay £50 for him ynwa

  • JOE says:

Suarez worths nthing less than £50m. Player n cash deal, s still considerable. Pepe + £35m

  • manu4life says:

Never had a doubt with his football skills. It’s about his excess baggage that am referring to. cantona was also the same genius with the ball at feet controversial off it. I would rather not have even cantona nor suarez in my team. Your comment just says how fickle minded you are. never said a word about Liverpool it just goes to show how easy it is pointing fingers at other teams and its players.
