There can be no excuses for League’s 6th longest serving manager

Rodgers LFC trainingTHE English Premier League is a turbulent place where careers start and end in a flash. Brendan Rodgers started his reign as Liverpool FC manager back on the 1st June 2012.

He had a new club to get use to. A much bigger club then any he had managed before. He had new pressures and expectations to contend with.

Players were being paid more than they were worth to the club. The value of their performances on the pitch did not equate to their pay packets. Many had been bought in for a cost that was higher than any other club would pay to take them off our hands. They were short on quality and the club needed new blood.

Liverpool FC were recovering from the football, or lack of, being played under Hodgson. Under the guidance of King Kenny, we were not playing the free flowing football Brendan Rodgers wanted (I’m not saying we are now). He had to teach players to play the way he wanted.

Yet again things were being changed behind the scenes. Gone was Damien Comolli and a new scouting system set-up was being put into place. Brendan Rodgers had a great deal of work to do.

As I write this Brendan Rodgers has been at Liverpool FC for exactly one year. Longer than Paul Lambert has been at Aston Villa (one day longer). Steve Clarke has been at West Brom for less time also (by a week) as has Norwich’s Chris Hughton. André Villas-Boas has been at Tottenham for a month less. Michael Laudrup has obviously been at Swansea less time too.

Many Premiership clubs are now undergoing managerial change. Stoke’s Tony Pulis has left by mutual consent. Everton’s David Moyes has left by not renewing his contract. Manchester City sacked Roberto Mancini.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
During the season Sunderland sacked Martin O’Neill. Southampton sacked Nigel Adkins. QPR sacked Mark Hughes. Chelsea sacked Roberto Di Matteo and now Rafa has also left. Reading sacked Brian McDermott. Wigan’s Martinez left and is most likely to take charge across Stanley Park.

As the table stands now, only Newcastle’s Alan Pardew, Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger, Fulham’s Martin Jol and West Ham’s Big Sam have been at their club’s longer than Brendan Rodgers. Of the clubs promoted to the Premiership only Cardiff City’s Malky Mackay has been at his club longer too.

In the crazy world of Premier League football, Brendan Rodgers is now a seasoned veteran. He is the Premier League’s 6th longest serving manager!

Malky Mackay doesn’t have Premiership management experience. That equates to four managers with more experience than him in the league who have been at their current clubs longer than him!

Liverpool FC are not even in Europe next season. Less games, less distractions, less excuses.

If Liverpool FC are not, at the very least, mounting a serious challenge for 4th place, a challenge that is realistic until the last day of the season, then I think Brendan Rodgers would have to accept he had failed and be expected to leave our club. What do you think?

Time for excuses is over. In my opinion it’s time to back Rodgers in the transfer market and see what he can do. It is time for Rodgers to deliver!

An armchair fan who loves the stadium experience but likes the bread and butter of replays, moronic pundits, a drink in a pub atmosphere. LFC is my religion.

Common sense is missing from football but the situation is always complicated so I endeavour to give opinion and encourage discussion and thought about LFC.

Good article – definitely seen some positive changes but I agree honeymoon is over. Expect to hit the ground at a good pace at the start of next season. Irrelevant of Suarez situation.

  • callum says:

There should be no excuses next season.but _ you know what ? We will hear plenty of excuses anyway ! It seems that’s all we see on sites like this every week. I’ve never seen fans make up so many excuses as they do for Rodgers

    • paullfc30yrs says:

That’s because we have never had a politician like speaking manager before. The mans laughable at times, and the spin coming out of Anfield is a joke. Crap season, spun into a good one……..Yeh right, If you happen to be feeble minded and are not capable of a critical thought.

  • Bill says:

So you’d have him sacked after 2 seasons of transition with a very limited budget and a plethora of players that he couldn’t give away. so he’s left with teaching these old dogs new tricks, and in some respects he has done so in the case of Henderson and Downing who have improved 100%, although still not worth the money Comolli paid for them.

He also has to deal with FSGs miserly wage structure. He may have got it wrong with some of his buys i.e. Allan and Borini but as both had an injury ravaged season. It just occurred to me that, how many teams have had 4 players out with shoulder injuries in such a short time? Or so many shots on the post that in the end cost us Europe, along with trying to curb Suarez’s excesses. This changing managers every season has to stop. If he is sacked then we need to do a Chelsea and bring back Rafa.

    • callum says:

Ridiculous. See ! Fools like this will make excuses next season too
Rodgers was lucky with no injury to his best players last season . Amazingly lucky

And he was amazingly lucky that Allen n borini got injured as they were useless

    • TaintlessRed says:

Yes. If he can’t muster a top 4 challenge he must be sacked. We should have easily qualified fir Europa League this season, Rodgers failed. We’ve been well below par, boosted by Jan signings. 7th isn’t progression. Rafa git sacked fur finishing 7th.

      • Eddie says:

Kenny got sacked for 8t n winning a trophy !! Better than Bodger but still got boot

        • Daveyj says:

How can you say Kenny is better than Rodgers, his second coming was a disaster, set our club back 3/4 years because fsg trusted him foolishly. Look at his transfer record at Newcastle when he went there, sold Tino, ginola, Ferdinand. Bought rush 36, Barnes 35 and Pearce 36. They are just a couple of exaples, plus he had been out the game for 15 years

          • bob says:

how can anyone say that trophyless rodgers , who has achieved nothing ever, can even be compared to Kenny.

kenny built two great teams with class players at liverpool and blackburn , winning multiple trophies.

rodgers has wasted our money on some of the worst players ever to wear a liverpool shirt in allen borini assaidi etc.

rodgers is nothing compared to kenny. kenny eats trophies for breakfast

          • Eddie says:

Kenny won a trophy last season and finished 8 th , got to another major cup final despite having injury to Gerrard and Lucas and missing his star player Suarez for 10 games

Rodgers spent 57m had no major injury to top players , 3 pathetic cup exits and still only finished 7th.

            Really . Get a grip

          • paullfc30yrs says:

Easy, look at What Kenny achieved as a Manager, compare it to Rodgers, There can you see it now?

  • Obed muhanguzi says:

Pls lfc fans lets back our manager bse to me he has done wonderful things for our club . He just needs money in this summer othorwise we will be in the top 4. Thx live long B R God will help you.

    • callum says:

      ??? Wonderful things ??? Where ??
We had a awful miserable embarrassing season

    • Sunyer says:

Wonderful things ma foot, u call ds season wonerful by been knocked out by lowers teams in the cup?

    • paullfc30yrs says:

Convince me of these “Wonderful things”, and I might take you seriously.

  • Curtis says:

I think success will come from stability, not from changing managers every time we don’t achieve our aims.

    • TaintlessRed says:

No. Success does not come from stability. Success comes from making better decision than your opponents more frequently. If you’re doing that then you see improvements. Stability is earned. BR has done done hood things but lots of poor decisions as well. He says he’s learned. If he has, well done to him, and he’ll have to prove it next season.

  • Obed muhanguzi says:

You are right Curtis! look at manuted’s Sir AF did because he was enough time to imprement his strength .thx @Obed from kampala.

  • Brigadier says:

Rodgers is the most over-hyped manager i can remember. We only played well when the pressure was off, out of all competitions by mid-February. The rubbish that we are playing ‘tiki-taka’ football is complete garbage. QPR matched us for quality/posession in the last game of the season! Pathetic.

  • David says:

BR is a better manager than Dalglish – but then a retarded toad would be… KD took the best team in English football and left them so desperate they put Souness in charge (another retarded toad). Came back and spent a fortune on garbage… So I think BR has done pretty well in his first year. By the way – when did Man U compete for the title under Ferguson????

The next 3 transfers are critical… Liverpool should have somewhere around 60mil to spend if Suarez (plus Carrol) leaves… If he gets it right then Liverpool will be competing for more than top 4….

    • Brigadier says:

Yeah keep blaming previous managers for Brenda’s short-comings, so what is the next manager going to do with Brenda’s signings? Borini, Allen, Assaidi? Thank goodness Sahin wasn’t signed up for 25m on a 5 year deal. Brenda is out of his depth, a gambler who cant believe his luck.

    • Michael says:

How many trophies has dalglish won ?
How many trophies has Rodgers won ?

Dalglish delivered our best team ever and played the best football any Liverpool team ever has

Rodgers is a joke compared to dalglish

    • bob says:

don’t be silly david. that is simply not true.

kenny is a manager who has built two great teams , won the double. won multiple major trophies , while rodgers highest place finish is 7th and doesnt even know what a trophy looks like

    • paullfc30yrs says:

You have just proved what a one season wonder fan you are, The way you speak about a club legend is disgusting, probably one of the many “Plastic” fans Whome followed Rodgers from Swansea, either that or part of his PR team that has taken over most of the lfc message boards, making any kind of debate we might have about our “Average” manager impossible.

  • red says:

I still hoping for new manager for LFC.

  • Sunyer says:

    Ds season was awful, simple.

  • Makintosh says:

I bliv in B R to take us to top 4 nxt season and even if he doesnt I’ll still remain a liverpool fan. Jst stop laying complains nd let d manager do his job dat he’s paid to do. U know wat? Those pple dat complain knows little or nothing about football, they only watch football matches. YNWA

    • Eddie says:

Ha ha . The Muppets who believe in Bodgers know nothing about football. Anyone will a clue know he’s rubbish

    • paullfc30yrs says:

That’s rich coming from a fan who has no opinion of their own, therefore you just relay the rubbish that has come from Brendan’s mouth. Been a Liverpool fan for 30 years, and not just when Brendan became manager, unlike some of the snotty nosed fans we have now. Worst season for decades, could not win the top sides, Won a few games against nobodies and teams already doomed at the end of season and that was enough to have the deludes declare, “we don’t need Suarez”. Without Suarez on fire this season, we would have been in a relegation battle, now there’s the truth about Brendan’s season, without the spin.

  • bob says:

there is no doubt that rodgers is the luckiest manager in the world not to be sacked.
after the season we just had , any other major club would have got rid. there must not be any more excuses or chances

  • Makintosh says:

Who amongst u hav ever coached a club b4? If u hav’nt then shut up nd let d manager do his job. Muppets! YNWA

    • Eddie says:

Are u stupid ? Good manager gets good results . Bad manager gets bad results . Rodgers has got bad results. If the manager was ‘doing his job’ then we would have had a better season

    • paullfc30yrs says:

I am sure you were saying that when Hodgeson was in charge?….Hypocrite…Why would any real fan not question the manager after such a crap season?, on all fronts. Then again Hodgeson didn’t have the talk, unlike Rodgers.

  • daniel says:

Don’t you guyz get it??… Rodgers has now till christmas to get us where we want to be else he gets fired… Get behind him and if u cant please join a new club.thank you.

  • scouse ed says:

    Roll on xmas

  • Jamie says:

FFS I don’t know why there was so many excuses the first season. Good managers hit the ground running. Laudrup ,Clark. AVB didn’t need poxy excuses in their first season. We shouldnt be forgivin Rodgers for a pretty darn pathetic season

  • ben says:

Didn’t Rogers do much better than Laudrup and Clark, AVB didn’t get 4th yet Harry could so how can you compare him to those managers? The team he got is not good enough to challenge for 4th he can’t be blamed for that, he didn’t have the depth nor did he have a strong starting 11 to compete at that end of the table, if we get rid of him then what? Spend money we don’t have on more players that might not make it? Its a backward step to sack him, and I don’t believe you can call any one a muppet for supporting a LFC manager I think you call that support.

    • Jamie says:

AVB did a lot better than Rodgers as did Clark and laudrup given their resources. They didn’t gave 54m to splash that Rodgers did. Rodgers has been terrible. And I didn’t call anyone a muppet , just queried why Rodgers having been so poor gets away with the criticism he deserves by some fans. All fans have done all season is make poor excuse after poor excuse just like u have

  • ben says:

54 million is hardly a splash for aspirations of a top four finish the amount he got to spend I didn’t expect him to get near 4th I’m not saying he did nothing wrong but what did you expect, Champions League football with a mid table team? I can’t see how you expected anymore, Every team that finished above us besides Everton actually have a better squad than us and more resources.

  • scouse ed says:

We are Liverpool. There should not have so many excuses last season. He simply is not a good manager

  • ben says:

    Compelling argument Ed.
