Who will be the Ace up Rodgers’ sleeve?

Henrikh-MkhitaryanAS reports continues to surface regarding the pending departure of Liverpool forward Luis Suarez to Real Madrid, Brendan Rodgers seems determined to continue in his efforts of building a Liverpool squad capable of challenging on all fronts with or without the star striker.

In anticipation of the upcoming transfer window, the media seems to be having a field day.

The number of players constantly being linked to Liverpool FC is mind boggling to say the least.

It has become a cliché to say you don’t trust the media and you may be correct not to do so.

However, regardless of the players linked to the club one thing is certain, it will be an extremely busy period in Brendan Rodgers life as Liverpool’s Boss.

And as we welcome the uncertainty that this period brings, I’ve attempted to dissect as best as possible the more realistic and likely transfers that may be brought in by Rodgers.

Goalkeeping

Pepe Reina looks set to continue between the sticks for the Reds, at least for another year. In fact his agent recently stated that the stopper has no intentions of leaving the club, however, reports continues to grow as to his possible departure to Barcelona, the signing of the Belgian international Simon Mignolet from Sunderland looks like a sensible move, let’s hope Brendan Rodgers can get this done.

Defence

Now this is an area that certainly is in need of reinforcements and regardless of the acquisition of Kolo Toure on a free transfer, the likely players to be on Rodgers’s short list are:

Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori, with Sky Sports recently reported that a £3 million initial offer was rejected by Sporting and a subsequent follow up bid is expected. At 21 years old and stand at approximately 6ft 3inches tall, the center back has good aerial ability, versatile and quick, a solid defender indeed, and at that price would be a bargain.

Another player being linked is Greek international centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos. Indeed, reports are that Liverpool FC is ready to offer Schalke £12million for the 21 year old’s services. Papadopoulos would certainly be the steel in the centre of Liverpool’s defence that is lacking right now, and although priced a bit steep would be a decent investment.

There are also reports of ongoing talks between Reading’s Alex Pearce and Liverpool FC, but nothing concrete at the moment. However, Papa seems to be Brendan Rodgers top defensive target, and appears to be the best option of the three, let’s get him.

Midfield

There are an abundance of talented players in our midfield, and mostly youngsters. I wouldn’t take too much away from what we have at the moment. However, with Rodgers intended on lowering Liverpool’s wage bill, there are going to be casualties. Rodgers stated recently that he is looking to add 20 or so goals to the team. There are reports that FSG are ready to back Brendan in his attempt to secure £22 million rated Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

In addition, Rodgers has also identified Sevilla winger Luis Alberto as a potential signing and indications are that he has already agreed personal terms with the winger but is yet to finalise with Sevilla.

Forward

On the attacking front, the addition of Iago Aspas meant that Liverpool for the first time in a while will have a quartet of forwards and despite the financial backing of FSG, will not need to make any additions in this department. However, there will definitely be some shuffling if we lose Luis Suarez.

Should Suarez be allowed to leave here are two candidates who would fit well into that role of goalscorer; Christian Benteke and Mario Gomez.

Looking at the potential signings and identified targets thus far, there is no doubt that the Liverpool’s Squad will be a lot stronger. However, I still think that Brendan Rodgers has another Ace up his sleeves. (Hopefully).

I have been a Liverpool F.C supporter since the mid 80's, I fell in love with this club when I saw the likes of Ian Rush and John Barnes play. I hold a Law degree from the University of London ,and a Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of the West Indies.

Oh come on, he has performed worse than any other manager, bar Hodgeson, Fans would be dumb not to question the manager..This arguement is being over-used to just excuse an average to poor season from Rodgers.

  • Excel says:

With or without suarez lfc can make it, beside chelsea fc did it without drogba and tottenham are getting stronger without modric.

Ace up his sleeve ? Ha . Maybe Rodgers has another Welsh Xavi somewhere ?
Rodgers is bloody useless , our only hope is that the transfer committee is making the decisions and not Rodgers. He is NOT to be trusted.

I really hope Rodgers bring in a cdm to Liverpool. Maybe in the likes of mascherano, m.sissoko etc. Lucas is really not at his best right now and need another guy to back him up to challenge his spot. I’m surprised no one has really looked into this matter

  • Dawnga says:

Well, one thing is clear from all this. To be an LFC fan you have to be:

    1) Faithless in the manager and in everything your club is doing.

    2) Never feel any of the new signings are going to work.

    3) Be a negative *&%#@ all you can.

    4) Always bring everyone down

Well, i think the other EPL club fans are doing that for us superbly without your help thank you

  • Kenn says:

    All i want is EPL..

  • Samuel Charles Evans says:

Never mind who is coming in, even before that we all need to wake up and so do the owners and the manager!!!

    Shelvey,Carroll,Spearing,Pacheco,Flanagan,Assiadi,Ngoo,Coates, should all go.

Allen,Henderson,Downing,Borini,Aspas,Sterling, ibe,Toure, kelly, suso, wisdom, are all squad players at best.

Liverpool need 2 center backs, never mind just bringing in papa, with Agger he could miss games just as easy as blinking, Carragher is gone and Toure is not what he was at all!!!

Enrique needs competition at left back and i don’t mean young Jack Robinson at all!

Young Ilori is not good enough to come in and be a starter, not a chance! he is a replacement for Coates who should fund the deal for Ilori!

You then need another center back as Skrtel seems like he is off, so that’s just Papa, Agger,Ilori, wisdom, Kelly & Toure for places at center back, that’s not good enough!!!!

We then need wingers, or what you call wide forward, Aspas is a risk of a deal, Borini is a squad player – option form the bench form what i have seen, he has to stay fit and play well to prove his place,?

Sturridge for me is not even close to being 1st choice up top, with Suarez going (odds on that) Young Sturridge has to stay fit, and then play week in week out and work hard like Suarez does for even then to be considered as our best front-man.

We still need another striker, end of discussion there !!!

we need even after Suarez goes.

    we need a left back
    we need x2 center backs
    we need x2 wide men
    we need x1 striker
    WE HAVE MUCH TO DO!!!

  • mike says:

Gomez won’t be moving to Liverpool. BR likes his 3 front men to rotate to confuse defenders. Could Gomez fill that role left by Suarez? I don’t think he could.

    • David says:

I will like Liverpool FC to sell Coates, Skrtel, Pacheco, Asaidi(though he still needs playing time), Downing and lastly, Reina and maybe Suarez if he wish to go, Let him go. Let Liverpool FC brings in Papadolous, Ilori, Henrikh, Morata(as part of suarez deal), Aspas, Atsu(if Asaidi goes), Begovic/Mignolet and lastly Eriksen. Let Shelvey and Suso go on loan to gain more first team experience.

  • Raam says:

Negative thoughts are as important as support Terry. Its good to have people like you for any team but critics sometimes see what some refuse to admit. They are just pinpointing to things we ignore cause they love this club as much as you do.23 years wait is not easy!

  • bob says:

alot of people are thinking we will get top 4 next season , or even challenge for the title – well , that is crazy talk
we have a average squad about to lose its best player , and none of our signings so far are top quality . added to that – owners who wont spend big and a inept manager , i doubt we will finish higher than 6th

  • Samuel Charles Evans says:

The club has seen better players leave than-

carroll, spearing, assiadi, shelvey, flanagan, Pacheco, wilson (gone), coates, skrtel,

that lot there have hardly done anything in a red shirt, have to high wages for not even being at the club, all bar skrtel, even skrtel did not like playing a squad game!!

Skrtel is not a bad player but selling him for a younger better player with better wages makes a good business deal unless fans need to go back to economics class!!!

Then you have Downing, maybe Reina and Suarez. the only two player that are in these lists that i want to beg to stay are Suarez and Reina.

Reina is not as what he once was but he is so big to the team in terms of dressing room and still has 2 years in him at top level.

Suarez it speaks for itself but if he wants out then if we can get 50 mill then great use the money to help the whole team out.

Downing for me is a good squad option at best, he should be not even close to a 1st team player at a club like Liverpool but that’s what state

However if we can trade him in and get around 8 mill then buy Tello then Im all for this!

  • ndubuisi says:

we just have to suppport d team.i blv in liverpool
