Liverpool are about to dodge a very expensive bullet

SpainAFTER his second brief pre-season appearance against Thailand in Bangkok on Sunday morning, it became much clearer that Luis Suarez was on his way out of the club, or at least clearer that he wanted out of the club.

So far there have been few players linked with the club as ‘replacements’ for Suarez but one name that has cropped up once or twice in the past week is Valencia’s Roberto Soldado. With reports that Tottenham are to finalize a move for the Spanish striker late Sunday evening it would appear that Liverpool will have to set their sights elsewhere.

Many Reds fans have spoken of their joy at being linked with the striker and I’ll admit that his goalscoring record in the past few seasons has been highly impressive but he is far from an adequate replacement for one of the most deadly footballers – and strikers – on the planet.

With a record of 81 goals in 144 games for the struggling Spanish side, Soldado would appear to be a solid replacement for near enough anyone but what a player like Suarez brings to a team like ours is much more than just goals, he is more or less the epitome of our style of play; he is all-action and adds something to the first-team whenever he’s on the pitch.

As good as Soldado may be in front of goal, the £30 million touted for him wouldn’t buy enough of what Suarez gives us to be worth the money.

Not only that, but at the age of 28 I believe he is too old to be able to adapt to the Premier League and that is something a lot of fans seem to have missed. Remember Morientes? Shevchenko? They were world-class strikers that were in their late-20s and were all set to set the league alight but failed.

I have always believed that, for certain players there is an age that, once passed, makes a player much less likely to adapt – physically – to the pace and speed of the English game. That isn’t to say that the English game is better or worse, it’s just a simple fact – football on these shores requires much more from a player and the younger they are, the better as they’re more likely to be able to adapt to it.

Tottenham will surely feel that they’ve jumped ahead of us and that this will be a ‘coup’ on their part but I truly believe that we’ve dodged a very expensive bullet, if we do happen to miss out on Soldado.

If we were bankrolled by a Russian oligarch, then I wouldn’t care how or when we squandered our money but we’re not so we can’t just go blindly throwing a fortune at players who are too close to 30.

You just don’t get it, do you. Even if LFC have to put him in the reserves for a year, Suarez will only leave this club on our terms. Standing up to him, and this *in general, is more important even than the fee he might fetch. Real come in on the last day,and the answer will be NO, or FO whichever you like. Suarez will be worth just as much in January or next Summer as he is now, and won’t be cup-tied for any of the CL qualified teams. So stop worrying, BR has showed us so far how ruthless he can be, and winning this saga is critically important to his image as manager of this club, to the worldwide image of the club, and indeed to the image of our owners.

If Liverpool have to sell Suarez then how about selling him to Chelsea for Lukaku + £25m? We could use some of that money to buy a top class centre half (strong, pacy, good in the air) and a strong aggresive midfielder (I like Diame at West Ham).

We should be looking to buy Bernard – I wouldnt care less about Suarez, if his replacement in the squad was Bernard, he’s pure class, left foot, right foot, headers and still young.

  • ps gill says:

Yes he show no interest in the games. Just get rid of him. But please buy a good striker not just young recruits.

Suarez should not be sold for no less than £55M and owners need to giv B Rodgers £35-£50M of their own capital/money to bring in players.

If Suarez is sold for £55M

Then the owners £30-£50M extra would see Rodgers have £85 -£105M

And Rodgers should ship out these 8 dead wood average hard working players and generate another: £25-£30M

Then These five attacking players should be brought to club:

AM: I Munian(20) Of A Bilbao for £12-£16M to compete with Alberto and Coutinho

RW/RWF: C Tello(21) Of Barcelona for £9-£14M to compete with Sterling

LW/LWF: B Arfa(26) Of Newcastle for £12-£16M to compete with Aspas and IBE

FD: P Cisse(28) Of Newcastle for £12-£16M to compete with Sturridge

FD: L Muriel(23) Of Udinese for £10-£14M to compete with Cisse and Sturridge

    And these Five Defensive players:

GK: A Mccarthy(23) Of Reading for £4-£7M to compete with Mignolet for the next 4-8 years

CB: K Papadopolous(21) Of Schalke for £12-£15M to compete with Skrtel for next 2- 5 years and then too take over from Skrtel

CB: T Alderwierld(24) Of Ajax for £7-£9M to compete and learn from Agger and Toure for the next two seasons then to take over and be first choice partner of Papadopolous in three years

LB: A Cissokho(25) Of Valencia for £3-£5M to compete with Enrique for the next 4 seasons

DM: E Capoue(24) Of Toulouse for £7-£10M to compete with Lucas for next 5 seasons

  • Denis D says:

The 8 dead wood players still at club are as follows

    GK Jones
    RB Flanagan
    CB Coates
    DM Spearing
    AM Pacheco
    RW / RWF Assaidi
    LW /LWF Downing
    FD Borini
