Future captain? Gerrard reveals his ideal replacement

captain EnglandSky Sports today suggests that Steven Gerrard will be hanging up his international boots after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Liverpool FC captain was quoted as saying:

“I’ve got to assume it’s my last year. I can’t assume I’m going to be here in two or three years’ time.

“I’ve got to make the most of every single game. For all I know, I might be out of the picture in a year’s time. I want to make the most of it.”

Gerrard was talking ahead of today’s England friendly against Scotland, where he will win his 103rd cap as a player.

The Reds star also talked about who he felt could replace him in the England team and as the national team captain. Although it would be a big ask to replace Gerrard, he feels that Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere is the perfect player to replace him.

“Jack is so good I am sure when he gets to my age he will be sitting in my position with the armband on talking about another 100-cap player,” said Gerrard.

“I’ve got no doubt he can [be the man who succeeds him]. It’s his quality, his example in training every day. He wants to learn, he loves England. He ticks a lot of boxes when it comes down to other players following his lead.

“I’ve been in a similar position, I missed a World Cup and many caps. I’m really paranoid about putting too much pressure on any player but he is that good there is nothing for him to worry about.”

Liverpool fans will hope that if Gerrard does take the decision to retire from International football then that will mean his Anfield career will carry on for at least the next 2-3 years.

  • Brigadier says:

Wilshere is so over-rated its embarassing, first he’s the new Gazza and now he’s future England captain. Complete rubbish, if he has as good a medal collection by the end of his career as Gerrard, Carrick or even J Cole i’d be very surprised.
